Story ad improvements, and free trial membership (Site News)

New stuff! I'll keep this short. Basically, you can choose the location of story ads now. If you're a subscriber, you can choose to show all ads, only index ads or story ads, or no ads. Both of these preferences are on your display prefs page. And I finally got around to enabling free trial subscriptions. You can try out a full premium membership for a month, for nothing.
See inside for details.

Making dynamic mode work, and Fiction section news (Site News)

Ok, I promise this is the last Site News for a few days at least. I didn't want to post this, but people keep reporting that they can't get dynamic mode to work, and I keep answering the question all over the place, so here it is in one convenient hard-to-miss location:
To make dynamic mode work properly again, you need to shift-reload a page with dynamic comments, or do whatever your browser requires to get it to fully reload the linked javascript file from the server. Most browsers will try to use a cached file if they have it, and the old javascript code won't work with the new in-page stuff.
A word about Fiction below, and a request for more info on a bug.

New server news, continued slow (Site News)

The long-awaited new server does demonstrably exist, at last. It's up and running at the colo. However, it needs a kernel rebuild to use SMP (so it can see both processors) and bigmem (so it can see all 3 Gb of memory). I have been banned by Voxel from doing remote kernel builds, since I tend to screw them up and force someone to go down the colo and hit the Big Red Button, so dilinger will be building a new kernel on it tonight.
I decided against any premature archiving, because the proper archiving patch is very nearly ready and should be in CVS by Friday. Since this update is going to be kind of complicated, involving moving the database and upgrading Scoop, I will probably just be taking the site down for a day or so when it's ready to go. Right now I'm predicting that will be on Friday. So, if everything seriously bucks tradition and goes the way I expect it to, you should all probably make time-wasting plans for Friday that don't involve K5.
Meanwhile, everything will unfortunately continue to be intermittently slow. Please feel free to rant and rave and threaten to go back to Slashdot and so forth if it makes you feel better. :-)

Fiction Section Poll (Site News)

A proposal for a Fiction section was posted a few weeks ago. There was a lot of discussion which anyone who doesn't have an opinion yet should probably read, but the poll attached to that story was largely in favor of the idea. So I'm putting it to a general vote (the poll is on the front page).
The proposal is to create a fiction section. If the vote passes, I will by sheer bloodyminded executive fiat be replacing "Columns" with "Fiction". Of course articles published as Columns up to now will stay, but the section was never a good match for the way K5 works, and I don't think anything will be lost in axing it. If the vote doesn't pass, Columns will stay as is. In the interests of simplicity this time around, the options are just Yes/No/Abstain.
So please vote. The result as of next Wednesday will be implemented.
