COVER STORY

  Redesigning Miami's nightlife
From bathtubs to bohemian: Design district awakens after dark
The doorman at Grass Restaurant & Lounge. The club promotion fliers stuck on car windows. The line outside SoHo Lounge on a Friday night. The hunt for an available parking meter after 11 p.m. The signs of an emerging after-hours scene in the Miami Design District and its surroundings are everywhere.

MORE WEEKEND STORIES

THE SCHOOL OF ROCK (PG-13) ***
Substitute personality for talent and get a film that totally rocks
Jack Black has been hovering at the edges of stardom for several years now, but The School of Rock should finally propel him into bona fide superstar status. The movie is a polished (and irresistible) piece of crowd-pleasing formula and deserves to become a monster hit. But it is also a perfect showcase for the volcanic talents of the rotund comedian/musician/all-around wildman.

BROWARD AFTER DARK
Downtown Fort Lauderdale: See it like a tourist
Who needs to hop on planes like a crazy person when we can feel like we're somewhere else right in our own backyard? That being said: Please keep your arms, as well as all other body parts you may be fond of, inside the tram while it's moving. I'll be your tour guide as we meander through the streets of downtown Fort Lauderdale, filling you in on fun travel tips.

ALBUM REVIEWS
'Some Devil' lets Dave Matthews stretch
DAVE MATTHEWS Some Devil (RCA) One would perhaps wonder why Dave Matthews needs a solo project when the collective he's taking a break from is called the Dave Matthews Band.

TGI Thursday: SoBe club gets early start on partying
The weekend doesn't start until Friday? Not so, says the flock gathering weekly at South Beach's Code Lounge on Thursday nights. This group of mainly young, chic urban professionals believes in starting the party early -- or late -- depending on your perspective of time.

NIGHTLIFE
TGI Thursday: SoBe club gets early start on partying
The weekend doesn't start until Friday? Not so, says the flock gathering weekly at South Beach's Code Lounge on Thursday nights. This group of mainly young, chic urban professionals believes in starting the party early -- or late -- depending on your perspective of time.

VELVET UNDERGROUND
'X' already marks some spots in clubland
A recent ex-porn star told this columnist -- at Smith and Wollensky of all places -- that the porn industry is starting to explode in Miami. It's about time, considering the fact that on any given night -- especially Mondays at crobar for Back Door Bamby, any night at Opium and Prive, weekends at Automatic Slim's -- clubland tends to resemble the set of a large-scale adult film with hordes of scantily clad extras, wannabe porn stars, no plot and very bad, very cheesy dialogue.

BACKSTAGE PASS
Simon & Garfunkel tickets going on sale
The troubled waters have been bridged, so everyone will be going to Scarborough Fair when Simon & Garfunkel's ''Old Friends'' tour comes to Miami's AmericanAirlines Arena Dec. 17. Tickets, priced at $250, $125, $85 and $45, go on sale Saturday at 10 a.m.

HIP HOP
This town's really rappin' -- or maybe not
Brimstone127 is Miami hip-hop. And he isn't. He is because, as a kid, he would charge a quarter to showcase his breakdancing in the garage of his Southwest Miami home. He is because, in the early 1990s, he and his crew, Plan Be, bolstered the local scene by performing with respected out-of-town acts such as Fu-Schnickens, Positive K and Das EFX.

DVD SCANS
Polanski still wields control of `Knife'
At Roman Polanski's request, the fast-forward function has been disabled on the DVD of Knife in the Water (Criterion Collection, $40), giving a whole new meaning to the term ''creative control.'' Not only did Polanski call the shots on the set, but now he's calling the shots in your living room, too.

CASA DE LOS BABYS (R) ***
On a journey of desperation with no guarantee of salvation
John Sayles' latest film opens with shots of a tiny hand, a small foot, then finally, whole babies, sleeping babies, tucked into a room full of cribs in an unnamed Latin American country. These children are homeless, surrendered, one assumes, by girls too young or impoverished to raise them. But they are destined for what appears to be salvation. Eventually they will be adopted by Americans and begin new and presumably better lives in the United States.

VIDEO GAME REVIEW
Billy Hatcher's one to crow about
Platformers similar to Mario and Sonic were thought to be a dying breed of games, but a fresh batch just arrived with mixed results.

MORE DVD SCANS
`THE LION KING' Arguably the best of all the Disney feature-length cartoons, The Lion King (Buena Vista, $30) has been given an appropriately majestic treatment for its DVD debut. The two-disc set includes two versions of the film, the 1994 theatrical cut and the 2003 IMAX re-release cut, featuring new footage and enhanced animation. The film is accompanied by a treasure trove of extras, carefully geared to both children and grown-ups and covering everything from the making of the film to its popular...

NEWS AND RUMORS
The sudden death of John Ritter wrecked Lions Gate's plans to rely on the actor's participation for their upcoming DVD sets of Three's Company. Instead, the studio will now release a bare-bones edition of the show's first season in November, followed by a more elaborate boxed set of subsequent seasons next year.

TOP 5 HITS
DEVIL'S DUE Surprisingly, the Rolling Stones' classic Sympathy for the Devil never made the Billboard Hot 100. Until this week's No. 97 debut. That's because the 1968 track was never released as a single. The new CD-single features remixes by the Neptunes, Fatboy Slim and Full Phat as well as the original version.

IT'S A DATE
The theme: Theatrics. Preparation: If you have time, brush up on Shakespeare's The Tempest. If not, get the CliffsNotes. Rent the movie, The Forbidden Planet.

NEW MUSIC
IN STORES TUESDAY (Dates may change.) Joan Baez, The Complete A&M Recordings (1972-1976) (A&M). Four-CD box. Belle & Sebastian, Dear Catastrophe Waitress (Sanctuary).

ALSO COMING TUESDAY: DVD /HOME VIDEO
2 Down With Love (PG-13) ½: This Technicolor sendup of the ''Pillow Talk'' romantic comedies of Rock Hudson and Doris Day comes with the perfect defense against critics: It's supposed to be silly. It's confidently over the top, but even satire is expected to entertain. Renée Zellweger mugs and swishes and prances around as Barbara Novak, author of a how-to book advising women to live without men; Ewan McGregor is the sleek reporter determined to prove she really longs for love...

PARTY MONSTER'
A grown-up Macaulay Culkin stars as club kid/party promoter Michael Alig in Party Monster, a campy drama based on the real-life murder that rocked New York's nightlife scene in the 1980s. The Miami Gay and Lesbian Film Festival is hosting the movie's South Florida premiere at 8 tonight at the Shores Performing Arts Theater, 9806 NE Second Ave., Miami Shores, followed by an after-party at Jade Lounge on Miami Beach. Tickets are $25. For more information, call 305-534-9924.

SPINS
Space34 resident Oscar G is as well-known for his energetic 10-hour sets as he is for his alter egos Murk and Funky Green Dogs (both with Ralph Falcon). But he might be best known for Dark Beat, the duo's tribal-chant hit that became one of the biggest club anthems of last year. He's at Space34 Saturday (34 NE 11th St., downtown Miami; 305-375-0001) for a CD-release party for Murk's new release, out Tuesday.

CRITIC'S PICK | STAGE
A VOICE OF PASSION: She could have taught Madonna, J.Lo and Britney Spears a thing or 10 about raw sexuality onstage. Victoria Guadalupe Yoli, aka La Lupe, a tempestuous musical star, first in her native Cuba in the late '50s and early '60s, then in the United States, where she sang with Tito Puente's band, performed at Carnegie Hall and persevered through poverty, drug abuse and a broken back.

OUT OF TIME (PG-13) ***
Pumped-up pulp turns into a fine thriller
The more preposterous Out of Time gets, the more enjoyable the movie becomes. There is a playful air to this thriller about murder, adultery and double indemnity in the Florida Keys that keeps it from sliding into ludicrousness. Despite its grave subject matter, the movie never takes itself too seriously, and more than once, it threatens to turn into a comedy about a casually arrogant man who is overdue for a cosmic comeuppance.

New owners look for next Level
It has done glam under the avant-garde ownership of the artist formerly known as Prince. It has had hip-hop stars like Missy Elliot and Eve sashay through its VIP lounge.

CRITIC'S PICK | ART
PROPAGANDA OF WAR: Presented with eerie timeliness, Weapons of Mass Dissemination: The Propaganda of War at the Wolfsonian-Florida International University offers a look at how various public and private sectors promoted fear and patriotism during World Wars I and II. The show is drawn from the Wolfsonian's vast permanent collection of design objects for daily life, with propaganda popping up not only in posters but in children's books and board games. Weapons of Mass Dissmination: The Propaganda...
