 Timeline Details
3rd and 63rd Armies could not break trough the defense line. Only the troops at the meeting-point of the armies were able to penetrate 6-7 km. Pace of the advance increased after 1st Guard Tank Unit was put into operation at sector of 63rd Army actions. By the end of the day units of 11th Army have broken tactical defense line and penetrated almost 25 km. 1st Tank Corps with trenchant attacks smashed 5th Armored Division of the Wehrmacht. By the end of the day the break-through of 3rd and 63rd Armies has come to 14-15 km. Hitler, alarmed at adverse development of operations, convoked Field Marshal von Kluge, Field Marshal von Manstein and the rest of representatives of the High Command. On the summit von Kluge stated that Army Group Centre had to withdraw all active corps from 9th Army to liquidate deep breaches at 3 sectors of 2nd German Army actions. He also made a conclusion: “Offensive actions of 9th Army can not be proceeded and resumed.” But the Commander of Army Group South von Manstein pressed for attacks. He maintained:” Finishing the battle now, probably, will be loss of the victory. If 9th Army at least hold the enemy and make it possible to resume the attacks, we’ll try to smash withstanding but strongly battered enemy forces.”
