From April to June 1943 a great work has been done at the Kursk Bulge: powerful line of defense, 300 km deep from front line and composed of 8 firing lines, has been created. Trenches and communications were stretched out to 10,000 km.

| Prokhorovka battle |

The tank battle at Prokhorovka was won by the Soviets. This battle caused heavy tolls for the Wehrmacht: a great number of soldiers and almost 400 tanks. |

3rd and 63rd Armies penetrated 17-22 km into enemy defense and reached interim defense zone near the Oleshnya River. An attempt of breaking the line immediately was unsuccessful. Development of offensive actions required throwing into battle the new forces.
