  Gene-altered pet fish roiling waters
A genetically altered fish is lighting up more South Florida tanks. But some biologists say more research is needed to see how the Glofish could affect native fish populations.
Glofish, America's first genetically engineered pets, are selling briskly in some South Florida pet stores, but some scientists and regulators are concerned that the fish swam around the federal government and into the marketplace.

This week the Humane Society of Greater Miami features Phil, a handsome, extra large Domestic Short Hair cat. He is an indoor cat that has lived with other cats. He is neutered and litter box trained.

Rocky is a 1-year-old bull mastiff mix who already weighs 85 pounds. He's big baby who loves to play with toys and also enjoys lying on the couch. He likes people of all ages but because of his size, he may be too much for little toddlers.

Canine mixer is catching on
About 60 'wiener dogs' get a chance to hang out and socialize at the second annual Dachshund Winterfest at Lummus Park.
Chloe wore a pink sweater with a little fur collar, PWee had on a red T-shirt, and Sammy sported a leather Harley cap. And those were just the clothes.

Zoey is a 4-year-old Labrador mix who was given up when the owner's new boyfriend starting sneezing. She is housebroken, loves to be petted and is good with cats. Check out all the pets looking for a home.

'Bad dog' sign may be pet owner's best defense
Q: My partner and I were walking our two Boston terriers on Miami Beach's Lincoln Road. We bumped into some friends who were also walking their two boxer pups. We chatted a bit, and as the dogs sniffed each other and got acquainted they got tangled in their leashes. When one of our friends tried to untangle them, our dog bit him on the hand.

Vet's advice sounds a bit fishy
Q: I live by the ocean and my husband brings fish home daily. My dogs and cats love it, but the last time I visited my vet I asked if it was OK to feed them fresh fish so often. She told me ''No,'' and said that it could lead to urinary tract infection because it can turn into crystals.
