Dan Marino returned to the Miami Dolphins as senior vice president of football operations Monday, a surprising move that gives the team a popular if inexperienced boss.

Has Steve Spurrier's failure as Redskins coach damaged the opportunities for others in the college ranks move into the NFL?

    Meet true immortals
Dick Vermeil had been gone from the NFL 14 seasons when he returned in 1997, and Joe Gibbs is back after 11 years away. Teams are reaching further and further back in the recycling of head coaches, an increasing number of whom chronologically would be considered prime blind-date material by The Golden Girls.

    NFC East coaches pack wallop
Enter the NFC East at your own risk. The stunning announcement that Joe Gibbs will return to the sideline for the Washington Redskins after 11 years away, coupled with the New York Giants' hiring of Tom Coughlin, returned the NFC East to a level it enjoyed during the 1980s and 1990s.

Jim Mora Jr. a curious choice as Falcons' coach
Of all the strange and suspect maneuvers made by the Atlanta Falcons over the years, the hiring of Jim Mora Jr. as head coach might rank somewhere between the second coming of Marion Campbell and the trading away of some quarterback named Brett Favre.
