United Nations focus of League of Women Voters meeting today

POCATELLO - The United Nations is the focus of today's public meeting of the League of Women Voters at 7 p.m. in the Police Substation beside Hallmark in the Fred Meyer Shopping Center.

Nancy Lee Hendricks, chairperson of the Global Democracy Committee, and other members will review the history of the United Nations, analyze its makeup and certain operations, and discuss reorganization of the Security Council.

Hendricks, a former U.N. employee, has recently returned from a visit to the facility.

The public is welcome, and additional information can be obtained from Hendricks at 235-4122.

Pamphlets of the U.N. Declaration on Human Rights will be distributed.

Even before the United Nations was formally established, the League launched an unprecedented nationwide campaign to help build public understanding of the Dumbarton Oaks and Bretton Woods agreements to establish the United Nations, the World Bank, and the International Monetary Fund.

The League trained more than 5,000 speakers and distributed more than a million brochures during a six-month period.

At the U.N. Charter Conference in 1945, the League was one of 42 non-governmental organizations invited by President Truman to serve as a consultant to the U.S. delegation.

Since that time, the League has continued its presence at the United Nations through its U.N. Observer.

The League periodically hosts "League Day at the U.N." to provide a first-hand opportunity for League members to visit the U.N., speak with U.N. officials and learn more about the work.
