Deaths

Dale G. Sortor
POCATELLO - Dale G. Sortor, 73, passed away Thursday, Feb. 12, 2004 at his daughter's home with his family by his side. Dale was born Aug. 28, 1930, the third of 11 children of Howard L. Sortor and Lucy Mae Higley Sortor in Tetonia, Idaho. Dale joined the U.S. Army on Aug. 28, 1947 at age 17. He served two years in Korea and one year in Japan. He was home on furlough when the war started in Korea. He was called to Korea on July 26, 1950 and was shot in the leg Sept. 24, 1950. He served in the military until 1952.

VENTURA, Calif. - Evelyn B. Jones, 86, longtime Pocatello resident, died Friday, Feb. 6, 2004 in Ventura, Calif.

U.L. Branch
COLDSPRING, Texas - Mr. U.L. Branch was born to Mr. Robert and Mrs. Vinicia Branch on Aug. 21, 1940. He was reared in the town of his birth, Coldspring, Texas.

POCATELLO - Esther Simpson Turner, 74, Pocatello, died Friday evening, Feb. 13, 2004 at a local health care center. A complete obituary will be in a future edition of the Idaho State Journal. Arrangements are under the direction of the Cornelison ~ Henderson Funeral Home, 431 N. 15th Ave., Pocatello.

LAS VEGAS - Joseph Palmer, 74, Las Vegas, died Wednesday evening, Feb. 11, 2004 at a Hospital in Las Vegas. Funeral services will be Wednesday, Feb. 18, 2004 at 11 a.m. in the Paradise LDS Chapel, corner of Bringhurst and Yellowstone, with Bishop Roger Holyoak conducting. The family will receive friends at the Cornelison ~ Henderson Funeral Home, 431 N. 15th Ave., Pocatello, Tuesday evening from 6-8 p.m., and also at the Church from 10-10:45 a.m. Wednesday prior to the services. Burial will be in the Mountain View Cemetery.

RIVERDALE - Funeral services for Maxine Hendricks, who died Feb. 11, 2004 at her home in Riverdale, Idaho, will be noon, Monday, Feb. 16 at Webb Funeral Home, Preston, with Bishop Sam Smith conducting. Friends and family may call from 6 to 8 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 15, at the funeral home, or 10:30 to 11:30 a.m., also at the funeral home Monday. Burial will be in the Riverdale Cemetery.

UI extension offers nutrition education class
POCATELLO - Audrey Liddel, family and consumer sciences educator with the University of Idaho, Bannock County extension, will have a lunchtime discussion for citizens of Bannock County. She has been busy with the Expanded Food and Nutrition Education Program and Extension Nutrition Program teaching classes on the food pyramid, food safety, cooking, saving money while grocery shopping, feeding children and money management.

Farm Bureau announces county speech contest winners
POCATELLO - Stetson Wilson, a student at Highland High School, was awarded first place recognition at the speech contest sponsored by Bannock County Farm Bureau on Jan. 22. Stetson's speech combined humor with statistics as he described the Wagyu beef industry in Idaho.

POCATELLO - Donald C. Jones, longtime resident of Pocatello, was born Feb. 14, 1924, in Cherry Creek, Idaho, just south of Malad to Hyrum John and Clara Burkhardt Jones. His mother passed away when Don was two weeks old.
