Journal Views (Feb. 1): Super Bowl means friends and food
Super Bowl Sunday. These days it's practically an annual national holiday. Granted, it's one of the few holidays when jeans and football jerseys are appropriate attire, and beer, bratwursts and nachos are on the menu.

Views on the Street: Do you think Super Bowl Sunday is basically a holiday? If so, how do you plan to celebrate?
"Yes. We're having a Super Bowl party." - Anita Lester, Inkom

Your Views: Police shooting
Regarding the death (recently) of a Vietnam veteran in Idaho Falls, and high-speed chases and so forth - I understand the hesitance of the police to try and verbally communicate with this man, and the fear and panic which perpetrated his death, but my question is, why aren't officers equipped with tranquilizer guns for just such occasions?

Regarding the Marsh Valley cat incident:

I appreciate that people have written with such passion regarding cruelty to animals and am thankful for such laws to protect animals. It's also important to recognize the fact that our communities have alarming cases of child abuse and neglect that rarely bring such public outcry and media attention.

What kind of an example did the shop instructor at Marsh Valley show when he told his students to kill a cat in their classroom?

The Journal, once again, is printing misinformation!

Having watched and read the news over the past several days, I felt as though I wanted to write a very brief letter regarding my former teacher, Gordon Gillman. I would simply like to let those who did not attend Marsh Valley High School know a little about the professional character of the teacher down south, who has recently come under fire.

Let me preface this by saying that I do not condone cruelty to animals. I am, however, appalled at the outcry toward this instructor. I was blessed to have two sets of grandparents that lived in rural areas, and I know of the problems that are created by unthinking and uncaring individuals that drop off animals in the country because they no longer want the responsibility of caring for these cute little things.

In regards to what happened at Marsh Valley with the cat: I find it hard not to state my feelings about this incident. I recently had a problem with a stray cat that was left in a room overnight. It urinated on two beds and the floor. It ruined all the bedding and was a mess to clean up out of the carpet.

I am completely outraged that in today's society we would allow cruel acts to animals in a place of learning! I would be disgusted to find out that no charges were filed. The kids at Marsh Valley High School need to know that it was and the people responsible will face the consequences.

I am writing this letter in regards to the incident at Marsh Valley High School that included the killing of a cat. I don't know where some of you people came from. I am honestly in shock over some of the things the Marsh Valley community is saying.

I have lived in the Marsh Valley community now for five years, and can't stand to sit by and watch a man as good as Gordon Gillman dragged through something like this.

I, too, "was shocked, horrified and sickened" by the story about a Marsh Valley High agricultural science teacher who reportedly urged students to kill a cat who had wandered into his classroom.

Your Views: Cheyenne crossing
Here is a big bravo! to Mayor Chase, Congressman Simpson and Sens. Crapo and Craig for landing the $1.5 million in direct congressional appropriation to build a bridge over the railroad at Cheyenne Street. This is a project with huge, positive potential for the south end of town.

I would like to thank the employees of the street department. I think with the increase in homes, the resources available to you and the lack of manpower, you have done a fine job of snow removal this year. I am sure there are many that do not agree with me. Maybe those people could do a better job?

Your Views: Law enforcement
Sharon McCarty is misguided in thinking that merging the two law enforcement agencies will save taxpayers money. I wonder if Ms. McCarty has ever listened to a police scanner to find out what actually goes on in this town that is never publicized; if anything, we need more officers.
