Great work
From April to June 1943 a great work has been done at the Kursk Bulge: powerful line of defense, 300 km deep from front line and composed of 8 firing lines, has been created. Trenches and communications were stretched out to 10,000 km.
The Kursk defense operation
2,582 people, 37,800 guns and mortars, 8,000 tanks and artillery self-propelled guns, 6,000 war-planes were involved at Kursk defense actions.

Main forces of Bryansk and West fronts assumed the offensive. The Command of Army Group Centre planned to recommence offensive actions. But their plans were ruined by thrusts of Bryansk and West fronts. Change-over to defensive operations of 9th Army was forced solution of Hitler’s Command. It took Central front Armies only one week to stop the offensive of German forces in Kursk-Orel direction. Zitadelle operation was provided for encirclement of soviet formations for 4 days, but the operation failed. In futile attacks best divisions of 9th Army were destroyed. After 15 minutes of artillery preparation, formations of 5th Army and 5th Guards Tank Army made a counter-stroke. Tank battle at Prokhorovka was won by the Soviets. This battle caused heavy tolls for Wehrmacht: a great number of soldiers and almost 400 tanks. The 12th of July was the day of collapse of German offensive operations towards Kursk. Attempts of the Germans to continue the offensive actions in the sector of 69th Army were of local nature. When the Germans have not reached Kursk, Mainstein’s forces retreated. And Corps of Voronezh front chased the enemy.



1st and 15th Air Armies conducted air preparation with strength of 100-150 t square km. Air forces neutralized the artillery and mortars of the Germans and destroyed strongholds. Concurrently, long range air forces attacked nearest railroad stations and crowd of the Germans. Powerful artillery preparation was realized. The Stavka strengthened the left of West front forces with 11th Army of Feduninsky. Forces of Bryansk and West fronts, having not to contain the attacks, stroke in Orel direction. 3rd and 63rd Armies could not break trough the defense line. Only the troops at the meeting-point of the armies were able to penetrate 6-7 km. Pace of the advance increased after 1st Guard Tank Unit was put into operation at sector of 63rd Army actions.
