APF fellowships were established in 1950 to help train Israeli physicians in specialty care. Since then, over 1,000 fellowships have been awarded. The fellowships serve as a supplement to established post-residency programs in North America. APF fellows are Israeli physicians or key medical administrators who demonstrate a financial need and the importance of the fellowship to the Israeli medical community. The practice of sending physicians to America for specialty training, generally following residency in Israel, is one of the principle ways the Israeli medical system enriches its reservoir of knowledge and experience. These fellowships offer young Israelis the opportunity to learn at leading American and Canadian medical centers and to form relationships with colleagues that last a lifetime. APF grants are typically $3,000 to $5,000 and are awarded for one year. An applicant may apply for a second year renewal but first year requests are given the highest priority, making second year fellowship availability quite limited. APF fellows are expected to return to Israel to work in the medical field. As part of the application process, candidates must show that there is an intention to return to Israel and a commitment to improving the medical care at their hospital or medical institution. In addition, an applicant's Israeli sponsoring institution must also confirm that a position is available when the fellowship term has ended. For more information, please contact the APF.
