Legend QDI factory in China
<
On December 9, 1997, Legend QDI of Legend
Holdings Limited, a listed red chip company in Hong Kong,
hosted a tour of its motherboard factory in Huiyang, and R&D
Centre in Shenzhen, China, by 26 computer media representatives
from 19 countries internationally.
Lasting
5 days, the tour fully delivered on its promise¡ª"Come
and see a Legend in the Making!" The international media
were given the opportunity to see for themselves the manufacture
of Legend QDI motherboards in China.
Founded in 1988, Hong Kong Legend Holdings
Limited is an offshoot of the Beijing Legend Group, its parent
organization.
A
motherboard manufacturer with comprehensive services, Legend
QDI covers all aspects of its products -- R&D, production,
marketing and servicing. Its internationally acclaimed motherboards
have attained global recognition with rising sales through
17 subsidiaries and distributors worldwide.
Legend
QDI motherboards obtained ISO 9001 quality assurance in 1995.
At present, Legend QDI sells 300,000 to 350,000 motherboards
per month which accounts to 10 to 15 % of the global market
share.
The Legend QDI factory is based in the Legend
Science and Technology Park (30,000 sq. m.) at Huiyang, China.
The factory houses the main production line of Legend QDI
motherboards and boasts advanced equipment such as the Fuji
high-speed SMT machines and the Tyradyne-ICT machines. Strict
quality control management and systematic operations made
possible by well-organized, disciplined workers were an eye-opener
to the foreign guests. In effect, the tour was an indication
of what a large modern China enterprise can be in the present
day context.
Legend QDI R&D centres are strategically
based in Shenzhen, Hong Kong and Fremont, USA, in order to
respond instantly to the newest developments. The media tour
took in the R&D Center in Shenzhen this time. Here, 60
engineers participate in the development of hardware and software
to ensure that the highest standards of technological development
are maintained -- comparable to the best in the world.
A unique feature of the R&D Center in
Shenzhen is that 2 different teams of specialized engineers
are allocated to separate production lines for PCB and BIOS.
The international representatives on tour were duly impressed.
Their comments on Legend QDI's R&D methods and strategies
revealed their admiration. Advanced technologies such as LogoEasy,
SpeedEasy, PowerEasy, ManageEasy, ThermoEasy and SecurityEasy
which bring enhanced flexibility and convenience to the use
of computers.
The tour comprised of 26 editors and journalists
from international and local media. 70 % of the foreign journalists
had come to China for the first time. The international editor
of <<European Sources and News>> reacted very
favourably to the tour. He said to our Technical Marketing
Team, "I will take pictures of what I see in order to
let my readers see the advanced levels of R&D as well
as excellent production methods of the modern factory you
have in China and of Legend QDI's admirable standards of technological
development."
Some reporters from Mainland China and Hong
Kong were pleasantly surprised to learn about the success
of Legend QDI's motherboards in international markets. Formally,
they were only aware of Legend as the top locally made computer
in China, enjoying unparalleled success in the domestic market.
Through contact with foreign journalists on the tour, they
now know of the great strides Legend QDI has made in capturing
a significant slice of the world market in motherboards. Very
much impressed by this Chinese achievement on a global scale,
the Hong Kong and mainland reporters expressed pride and admiration
in their coverage of the tour.
In
addressing the tour participants, Mr. Liu Chuanzhi, Chairman
of Hong Kong Legend Holdings Limited, said, "The Legend
Group hopes to rank among the top 40 to 60 in the InfoWorld
Top 100 in the year 2000 when the annual sales revenue is
projected to reach USD 3 billion. By 2005, we hope to rank
among the Fortune 500."
The foreign media representatives attending
the tour came from USA, UK, Canada, Australia, Netherlands,
Germany, France, Spain, Denmark, Sweden, Italy, Belgium, Malaysia
and Singapore.
