Heavy thunderstorms have affected parts of France with 80mm falling at Biarritz in the 18 hour period up to midday Wednesday. This is more than the average August monthly total of 70mm. Other significant totals were recorded at Niort with 46 mm in 6 hours and Tarbes with 60 mm in 18 hours.

The hot weather continues across large parts of Scandinavia with Trondheim in Norway one of the hot spots. On Tuesday, temperatures peaked at 26.3C, some 8 degrees above average with a very humid night following with temperatures falling no lower than 17.3C. Wednesday looks like being another hot one with temperatures already up to 25.1C by midday GMT.
Awash in Western Samoa

Torrential downpours across Western Samoa have given some impressive rainfall figures. One of the wettest spots was Faleolo airport where 182mm fell in just six hours up to 0600 GMT Wednesday. This is almost twice the monthly average which stands at 89mm.

It was another hot day across parts of northeast Canada with Moncton in New Brunswick worthy of mention. On Wednesday, temperatures reached 30.8 Celsius, almost 8 degrees above the average for early August.
Japanese Rains

Heavy rain has fallen across parts of Japan in association with a tropical depression. So far, Shimizu has been one of the wettest places with 157mm having fallen in the 12 hours up to midday GMT on Wednesday. This is a large proportion of the 231mm that Shimizu can expect during August.
