2000 monthly weather summary

JANUARY
FEBRUARY
MARCH

Dry, sunny and generally mild. Mostly rather cold and frost for two weeks after mid month. Very mild closing days with severe gales in the north.

This has been the sunniest January since 1994 in England and Wales.

Mostly mild wet and windy, especially during the first part of the month. There were some good sunny periods and some snow mid month.

This has been the sunniest February since 1989 in England and Wales.

Very dry, sunny and mild overall. A prolonged mild spell mid month ensured that temperatures were well above average. Unsettled later with some rain or showers, rather cold finish to the month.
APRIL
MAY
JUNE

Very wet in most parts of the UK. Many local rainfall records were broken in England, Wales and Scotland.

This has been the wettest April in England and Wales, since series began in 1766.

After a warm, dry start frequent outbreaks of rain and thunderstorms in southern England caused some local flooding. Very sunny in Scotland and N Ireland with many local records broken.

Mixed with spells of changeable weather and more settled anticyclonic weather.

A record deep low near the Faeroes produced record breaking gales (for June) in the north of Scotland, with gusts at Lerwick reaching 80 mph.

AUGUST
SEPTEMBER

Mostly cool and often cloudy especially in the east. Sunnier and warmer in the west. Heavy downpours caused localised flooding in places.

At Tiree, Argyllshire, Scotland it was the sunniest July since records began in 1927. In Armagh, Northern Ireland it was the driest July since records began in 1927.

Changeable but mostly warm. Sunny periods and showers dominated with a high incidence of thunder.

During the 21st heavy hail and thunderstorms were active over North Wales, the Pennines/Yorkshire and Humberside, with pronounced funnel clouds in attendance.

Generally warm with frequent outbreaks of rain, heavy at times. Short spells of fine weather.

Torrential rain caused localised flooding in parts of southern England on the 15th.

OCTOBER
NOVEMBER
DECEMBER

Very unsettled. Heavy rainfall in the second week brought flooding to Kent, Sussex and south-west Scotland. A severe storm in the last week brought more heavy rainfall and strong winds to southern Britain causing widespread flooding. There were snow showers in parts of northern England.

A tornado swept through Bognor Regis (west Sussex) on the 28th. In England and Wales it was the wettest October since 1903 ( series began in 1766 ).

Very unsettled with periods of persistent rainfall, heavy at times. Mild end to the month, but continuing wet and sometimes stormy.

In England and Wales this has been the wettest Autumn, since series began in 1766.

First half mild and unsettled. Colder and more wintry weather arrived during the last week. Some heavy snow fell in the north, and clear skies led to some severe overnight frosts. Returned to milder conditions at the very end.

Snow showers brought a white Christmas to parts of the UK, mainly in Scotland, northern England and parts of Wales.
