IMDb Movie of the Day
Inevitably compared with Trainspotting due to its uniquely-shot look at drug use by UK youth, 1999's Human Traffic never really made a splash in the U.S., with audiences instead flocking to see Go, a paean to the more comfortably familiar American rave culture. While both Trainspotting and Go offered audiences a look at drug use infused with dark and sometimes startling undertones, first-time director Justin Kerrigan's Traffic serves to proclaim the joys of drug consumption without qualification or apology -- an oddly brave choice, especially when stacked against the previously mentioned groundbreaking films. The story takes place in Cardiff over the span of a weekend, where six friends are living to escape their weekday lives for a few days of pubs, drugs, clubs and sex. Jip (John Simm) is working for a bland clothing chain and fighting sexual paranoia. Koop (Shaun Parkes) is a "serious vinyl pusher" with dreams of DJ fame, who is jealous of any man who comes near his girlfriend Nina (Nicola Reynolds), a friendly girl stuck in a fast food nightmare of a job. Lulu (Lorraine Pilkington) is coming off a string of bad relationships, and Moff (Danny Dyer) is still living at home and constantly arguing with his policeman father. One would expect such a carefree endorsement of drug use to be a fresh and exciting exploration, but the film somehow falls just short, with the lack of even the smallest consequences for the characters making the storyline feel superficial, leaving behind only stylized music, dance and conversation-filled slice-of-life amusement. -Heather Campbell (more)
