The full range of Met Office archived data and services are available to the research and academic community. These data may be provided at preferential rates or even free of charge.

The Met Office policy on supplying data at preferential rates to academia can be found in the Royal Meteorological Society journal, Weather Vol 50 No 2 pp59-61 (February 1995)

Higher education or charity funded projects

If your project is not explicitly funded, but funding comes from overall departmental funds at a higher education establishment or from a registered charity, and the results of the work will be placed in the public domain, then commercial data fees will be waived. Derived products, such as frequency analyses and MORECS (soil moisture) data, will be charged at 10% of the commercial rate. A minimum charge of £150 applies. Please complete and return the academic research data application form for a quotation.

Free data

University students are also able to use the free data service available to school students, should the data available meet their requirements. To find out more and request this data, please see the Data catalogue. Please note, only the data shown in the catalogue can be provided free of charge. If this data is not suitable please complete the research data application form detailed in the section above.

The Met Office National Meteorological Archive contains an extensive range of weather records and is open to the public. It may be possible for you to visit and photocopy records or copy data onto a laptop.

BADC data

If your project is purely academic research where the results are published in the open literature, you are entitled to use the meteorological data stored and managed by the British Atmospheric Data Centre (BADC).

Other funded projects

Projects receiving funding from industry, commerce, government or EU must anticipate paying for services at standard rates. We strongly recommend that quotes are sought at the time funding is being bid for. You will appreciate that allowance cannot be made for projects where this has been overlooked. Where appropriate, and entirely at our discretion upon receipt of a business case, the Met Office may waive charges in return for partnership rights within the project. Please complete and return the academic research data application form for a quotation.

Unfunded projects by individuals

At the discretion of the Met Office's Chief Scientist, some funds are available to support private individuals in conducting research. Upon receipt of proposals, an adjudication will be made as whether and what quantity of data should be released. Please complete and return the academic research data application form for a quotation.
