         Are Universities 'Halls of Corruption'?

The universities, are being detected as dishonest cases these days, and are making the people unhappy. A professor of the Dept. of physical education in Ewha Womans University, who admitted students into the school after taking a bribe was arrested. Also, that professor's brother accepted a large amount of money on condition that he succeed in the entrance examination to university.

The process of professors appointment is also the same. I heard that the universities often require a lot of money under the pretext of the development fund for school and book purchasing fund for professors. Also, professors overwork assistants as the staff of their enterprise and embezzle research funds or wages. So, the corruption by the members of university under such process is continued.

Of course, such things don't happen at every university. However, I'm regretful that such events not only injure every university members' honor, but also fall short of society's expectations on universities.

An education sphere including universities needs a radical solution for the corruption. The university should develop and carry out an evaluation system according to the objective standard. This is in order to minimize the subjective judgment of professors under the process of entrance examinations of the artistic and physical world. The universities have to consider a proposal which has expenses done transparently through the introduction of the card system for research funds.

The universities also must to raise the transparency under the process of professors appointment. In case of the system of professors re-appointment, they should guarantee a right of claim to a retrial at the end of the re-appointment trial. Because this system can be abused, a retaliatory measure to professors who point out problems about a foundation or the management of school. Also, the retrials have to be improved by being made into a plan in which outside committees participate.

We term a university as 'Halls of intelligence'. This is because we expect that a university is the group of supreme intellectuals of lofty personality and morality. The society in which universities are branded as 'Halls of corruption' dosen't have any future or hope.

We shouldn't only put blame upon the occurrence of disgraceful accidents. And we have to worry about the improvement plan of universities' governance with members of a school.
