Change, Creativity and Challenge.
-Interview with a CEO Jo Woon-Ho

A thinking bulldozer refers to a person doing whatever he or she has in mind without hesitation. This is a nickname of Jo Woon-Ho, President of Woongjin Foods Co. Ltd.  He graduated from our school (Dept. of Accounting, Evening College) and is well known for a powerful youth in the beverage market.  Although he didn¡¯t have a advanced degree and good background, he became a CEO in his 30s.  Let¡¯s meet him now.

 1) You¡¯ve been chosen as ¡®the leader of the Asian next generation¡¯ by the WEF(World Economy Forum). What's your secret of success ?

When people are under the circumstance where they don¡¯t want to be, they think profits and losses  in advance.  However, I accept it.  If it is inevitable, I accept and enjoy managing it.  Although it is not the one I want, there surely exists what to do.  Doing my best is important.  This is my theory; to accept the circumstance given to me and do my best.

 2) I guess you had been through many hardships before you got promoted to president.  How did you survive that time ?

I don¡¯t really remember such a harsh time.  Actually, it didn¡¯t seem difficult to me even if it might seem to others.  Of course, I had a hard time, but I took it positively, tried to find what to do at that moment and enjoyed dealing with it.

 3) What do you think is the source that makes you exist?

It is summarized as 3C. It's Change, Creativity and Challenge. Change means the spirit of youth. That is, don¡¯t be afraid of any hardship and go for it with the spirit. And, creativity is a creation. I wash my hair every morning. This is a daily routine to others, but not to me. It¡¯s because I want to change myself every day. I also need to refresh my mind.  Finally, challenge, which refers to a challenging life.  These are a great help to me.

 4) What do you think is most important to gain recognition in a society?

Your role is most important.  Create your own world and keep up with it.  Everyone has their own role in society.  When you do it with your own belief and philosophy, you will surely get a good reputation for that.

 5) What's your favorite motto?

¡®Have a dream and do your best with your current work.¡¯  Have a big dream and face up to the reality, not just pursue your ideal.  This has been a great help with my work.

 6) Finally, what can you tell the students of our university?

I want to tell them this. 'Have a big dream but set up a realistic ideal'. If you face up to the reality, predict the future and come close to your dream, you will feel yourself grown up.  You should also have a wide view of the world to make your dream come true.  However, don¡¯t chase the world. Look after yourself to make the world chase you.

I vividly remember that he greeted me with a soft and bright smile, not haughtiness as a CEO.  He didn¡¯t miss giving encouragement to our university students at the end of the interview.  ¡°First, love yourself.  It¡¯s important to clearly have your own thought.  Get ready for a chance.¡±  He is prosperous like a bulldozer and his future will be forever.  Let¡¯s show our ability to the world like him!
