AMD64 Technology’s Knock-Out Performance Celebrated By More Than 80 Industry Thought Leaders

— AMD’s customer-centric innovation drives industry to pervasive 64-bit computing —

SUNNYVALE, CALIF. -- March 2, 2005 --AMD (AMD: NYSE) today announced its AMD64 platform and visionary leaders have earned more than 80 industry awards globally since the launch of the AMD Opteron™ processor in April 2003 and the AMD Athlon™ 64 processor in September 2003.

“As AMD leads the industry to pervasive 64-bit computing, AMD64 technology continues earning support and recognition from other industry leaders,” said Marty Seyer, corporate vice president and general manager, Microprocessor Business Unit, Computation Products Group, AMD. “AMD64 technology delivers cutting-edge innovations in upgradeability, security and performance. These awards recognize the powerful results that technology leaders can achieve when they develop solutions in collaboration with customers.”

International praise for AMD64 processors crosses all platforms, from servers and workstations through desktop and mobile solutions. AMD recently received the “Most Innovative Hardware Solution” at LinuxWorld for the AMD Opteron processor, Models 852 and 252. Leading gaming magazine Computer Gaming World named the AMD Athlon 64 FX-55 processor as the “Best Hardware of 2004.” Readers of Tom’s Hardware Guide gave the 2004 Reader’s Choice Award for “Best Innovation in Desktop CPUs” to the AMD Athlon 64 processor and awarded “Best Innovation in Mobile Technology” to the Mobile AMD Athlon 64 processor. During 2004, AMD received numerous global accolades from leading publications and organizations including China Computerworld, Computer Shopper Magazine, CRN, EDN, In-Stat Microprocessor Report, LinuxUser & Developer Magazine, Maximum PC, PC Professionell, PC World, PC World Latin America, Red Herring, The Semiconductor Industry News and VARBusiness.

Performance-hungry gamers crave AMD64 processors, and awards for these processors assert AMD’s continued dominance in this market. “For the second year in a row, Computer Gaming World Magazine recognized AMD as one of the preeminent leaders in computing performance for desktop and gaming processors with the honor of Best Gaming CPU,” said Sam Kennedy, editor in chief of Computer Gaming World Magazine. “We are impressed with the AMD Athlon 64 FX processor series because it has all of the components a gamer could want – computing muscle with generational compatibility and the performance capabilities to deliver the ultimate gaming experience.”

As businesses focus on extending the value of their IT investments, the stability, performance and 32-/64- bit compatibility of AMD64 processors has earned AMD enthusiastic support from commercial customers of all sizes. “Prior to the 2003 launch of the AMD Opteron and AMD Athlon 64 processors, some industry observers questioned whether it was logical or possible to develop an ecosystem around a 64-bit architecture compatible with the 32-bit x86 industry standard,” said Nathan Brookwood, principal analyst at Insight 64. “Two years and more than 1,000 software packages later, the industry has embraced 64-bit computing based on AMD64 technology and it’s now obvious those earlier doubts were ill-founded. With AMD64 technology’s innovative Direct Connect Architecture, the company has clearly established itself as a technological powerhouse and a formidable competitor. Based on currently published roadmaps, it appears likely AMD will be the first supplier to deliver multi-core 64-bit x86 processors to enterprise server and workstation customers whose application workloads are poised to exploit this new technology.”
