Second-ranked Cal's softball team defeated No.7 Alabama
7-0 in the title game of the Malihini Kipa Aloha Tournament on Sunday in Honolulu.
The Bears (18-1), who beat Delaware State 12-1 in the semifinals, swept all seven games at the tournament. Their nine-game winning streak matches a season high.
Cal catcher Haley Woods was named tournament MVP after going 10-for-23 with 12 RBIs, a pair of doubles and four home runs. Joining her on the all-tournament team were pitcher Kristina Thorson, who went 3-0 with 24 strikeouts against two earned runs, and left fielder Lindsay James, who batted 12-for-27 and scored seven runs.
Against the Crimson Tide, which Cal defeated 3-2 on Saturday, starter Kelly Anderson (6-1) tossed a one-hitter and struck out seven.
Men's swimming and diving
Despite Duje Draganja's third individual
title at the Pac-10 Championships, top-ranked Cal couldn't beat Stanford two straight times. The Golden Bears, who beat Stanford in a dual meet on Feb. 19, came in second to the Cardinal at the conference meet that ended on Saturday night in Long Beach.
Stanford claimed the conference crown with 932.5 points. Runner-up Cal had 882.
Draganja, who had won the 50-yard freestyle and 100-yard butterfly earlier in the week, claimed the 100-yard freestyle on Saturday in a time of 42.30. Cal sophomore Rolandas Gimbutis was the runner-up in the 100 free in 42.54. Draganja, Gimbutis and sophomore teammate Jonas Tilly (43.29) all swam NCAA qualifying marks.
Cal set a Pac-10 meet record in winning the 400 freestyle relay, clocking in at 2:49.77 to break the previous meet record of 2:49.85 set by the 2000 Cal team.
Men's gymnastics
No. 10 Stanford upset No.7 Cal 222.675-219.775 on Sunday at Maples Pavilion. The loss comes one day after Cal finished in first place at the Peter Vidmar Invitational.
Cal co-captain Shawn Mowry won the floor exercise with a 9.650. Bears freshman Colin Christ won the high bar (9.550). The Bears host Temple at 7:30 p.m. on Friday at Haas Pavilion.
Women's gymnastics
Despite posting a season-high mark on beam (48.750) and the second-best all-around mark of the year (191.500), Cal fell to No.3 Utah (197.425), No.6 Florida (196.450) and Stanford (196.025) on Friday evening in Salt Lake City.
Cal (6-8) hosts North Carolina State at 7:30 p.m. on Friday at Haas Pavilion.
Women's water polo
Cal's Molly Hayes scored the game-winning goal with 19 seconds remaining in the third overtime
period, giving the No. 6 Golden Bears a 10-9 victory over No.11 San Diego State at Spieker Aquatics Complex in Berkeley. Elsie Winder led Cal (10-4, 2-1 MPSF) with three goals.
Cal routed Arizona State 10-2 on Saturday in Berkeley. Breanna Allison and Katie Card each scored two goals for Cal.
Men's tennis
After losing a home meet to Texas A&M; 5-2 last Wednesday in Berkeley, No.28 Cal wrapped up play at the Pacific Coast Doubles Championships on Sunday in La Jolla. The No.3-seeded team of Conor Niland and Patrick Briaud lost in the semifinals, while Cal teammates Ken Nakahara and John Pettit captured the consolation title.
The Bears will host TCU at 1:30 p.m. on Friday at the Hellman Tennis Center.
Women's tennis
Cal beat Arizona State, 6-1, last Thursday and Arizona 4-2 on Sunday to improve its record to 6-3. The
Golden Bears' win over the Wildcats in Tucson, Ariz., on Sunday had actually begun on Saturday, but rain and lightning in the Tucson area delayed the completion of the match.
Seventh-ranked Suzi Babos improved to 8-1 in dual matches, defeating Arizona's Maja Mlakar 6-1, 6-1 and ASU's Sabrina Capannolo 6-3, 1-6, 6-4.
The Bears host Pacific at 2:30 p.m. on Wednesday.
Men's golf
Cal finished fifth at the Ashworth Collegiate Invitational with a 54-hole score of 18-over 870 on March 1 at the North Ranch Country Club in Westlake Village. Tennessee won the 15-team tournament with a score of 852.
Cal next competes at the Hall of Fame Classic on March 18-20 in Houston.
Lacrosse
Cal's Liz Reifsnyder scored the game-winning goal, and freshman Brittany Aungier had one goal and two assists as the Golden Bears beat host Denver
7-6 on Saturday afternoon. The Golden Bears evened their record at 1-1 (1-0 MPSF) with their first conference game of the season.
Rugby
Top-ranked Cal routed Stanford's club team 82-5 on Saturday in Berkeley. The Golden Bears scored 50 unanswered points in the second half. Rikus Pretorius had a had trick for Cal, which retains the rugby version of the Axe with the win.
