Morning Star's Diary

All HIT Internet users,

A new Internet usage monitoring and blocking technology is being implemented this week across all of ______'s platforms including HIT. This system will monitor and block Internet access based on Acceptable Business Conduct (ABC's) practices. If a site is blocked when you try to visit it, you will see a "_______ SurfControl Access Denied" message in your browser. If you find that a web site that you need to do your job is blocked please contact the service desk.

Thank You.

I just got this email. What the hell are the ABC practices? And they don't say how they determine whether or not to block a site.

My company blocks Fark (none / 0) (#13)

but none of the filth here.

Back when I worked at IBM, there was no filtering. I learned that while nothing was blocked, everything was monitored. Reason being that IBM was testing its web monitoring/blocking solutions on it's employees. I just wish I could have put that on my resume'.

money companies waste on internet surveillance and security is sorta ridiculous.  if your employees aren't getting their jobs done, they aren't getting their jobs done, it really doesn't matter exactly why (whether they're looking at pornsites or whether they are clipping their toenails)

and as far as security regarding files and such, one time i had my access denied on something on the computer until i went and told my boss (who designed the access code system)  that it was really pretty stupid to deny my access when i could simply walk right upstairs to the file room and get copies of the same stuff i was trying to get on the computer in hardcopy AND a whole lot more.
and well, even IF that was a fairly simple example, my point would be- where there is a will, there is always a way and you aren't probably going to stop anyone who is seriously trying to get in from getting in.

and well, you know? the field of biometrics? where people use fingerprints or eyeball images to identify themselves to computers-  well what's to stop someone from killing you or  cutting off your finger or cutting your eyeball out to get access if they want it bad enough?

We have a good system here (none / 1) (#5)

Our system won't let you onto certain websites based on filters and blacklists, but instead of getting blocked, you are redirected to a login screen. If you really have a good reason to go to a site that was wrongly filtered, you just enter your UID & password and go on.

The obvious catch being that the login sends an email to about a dozen people, including your boss.

There is a reason for everything. Sometimes, that reason just sucks.

Probably a combination of a black list and a keyword-based filter. That's what we have here, and sometimes I cannot access sites such as (e.g.) "businessexcellence.com" because they have sex in the URL.
