Dreams of shopping mall riots (Diaries)

By nostalgiphile
Wed Apr 16th, 2003 at 06:17:15 AM EST

Last night they were shooting the protestors in my dreams. For some reason it was the German police---I know this because they were wearing the regulation green body armor and helmets---were surrounding a group of long-hairs (aka peaceniks) who'd just staggered into a building that bore strong similarities to the local PEP shopping mall. At first, frankly, I felt relieved they'd been caught, because the long-hairs and hippy chicks were teasing me and acting like they were gonna kick my ass. It wasn't till later, when they started killing them, that I began to get angry and a little scared.

So these cops, normally kinda slow and bureaucrat-like in Germany, had turned into killing machines. They somehow boxed in the protestors and were gunning them down, and even lobbing fragmentation grenades in amongst the by now tumbling hand over heels demonstrators. Very disturbing. Don't think I've been playing too many video games, I have'nt, the dream was too ultra-vivid for that anyway.

I have this particular dream pegged as a kind of guilt-reaction to not going to more anti-war demonstrations, but also there's a wierd mixture of boyish angst about being rejected by the "long-hairs" I never really managed to mingle well with as a youngster. As for the shopping mall, eh, well, I guess every portentious event will have something to do with shopping.
