It is ALL In The Details

11/30/04, 12:35 pm EST - Xoanon

Turin Turambar writes: While watching the ROTK:EE trailer, I noticed Cirth runes on the helmet of the Mouth of Sauron. I paused the trailer and some runes were a little difficult to make out; but eventually, this is what I got: "LAMMEN GORTHAUR" (bottom) & "GORTHAUR" (top)

The language is Sindarin and is literally translated: "Voice" (lammen)" & "Dread Abomination (Gorthaur)"

Now, Dread Abomination was the Sindarin name used during the First Age of (you guessed it!): SAURON! (see The Silmarillion p. 23) So what do you get? "Voice (or Mouth) of Sauron"

Top Film of 2004

11/30/04, 12:31 pm EST - Xoanon

Wegolas writes: The BBC is accepting nominations for its 2004 Film of the Year so everyone needs to go to bbc.co.uk and nominate The Return of the King. That is, of course, if ROTK is considered as 2004 even though it was out at the end of 2003. Better safe than sorry. As much as I like Potter, I don’t want Prisoner of Azkaban beating out my beloved LOTR. Mugglenet has already posted a similar message to it’s fans. [Vote!]

Saved from poor planning by Hobbitesque natives in New Zealand

11/30/04, 12:16 pm EST - Xoanon

April Orcutt writes: In New Zealand, place names drip from J.R.R. Tolkien's fountain pen -- Elfin Bay, Lake Truth, Mount Aspiring, Demon Trail, The Tower -- and "Lord-of-the-Rings" fans pilgrimage to sets for Middle-Earth. But the fans don't know what I know: Hobbits really do live in New Zealand. And they saved my life. [More]

Tentatively named "Andúnië" (the haven of the Faithful in Númenor), this one will (hopefully!) be oriented toward fellow artists and writers interested in the philosophy and especially the theology of Tolkien's work. I'd like for us to meet monthly at a location to be determined.

Astin preparing for next role: public life

11/27/04, 5:35 pm EST - Xoanon

Sean Astin was never quite movie royalty, but certainly minor nobility. The biological son of Oscar winner Patty Duke and the adopted son of her husband, John Astin (Gomez in TV's "The Addams Family"), he had a steady if unremarkable film career, starring in "The Goonies" at age 13, playing third fiddle to Brendan Fraser and Pauly Shore in "Encino Man" at 20, and starring as the underdog football hero in "Rudy" at 22. Do They Know a Thing About 1984 At All?

11/27/04, 11:03 am EST - Xoanon

When Britain's music veterans joined today's young pop stars to remake the Band Aid single the generation gap was obvious. Singer Joss Stone, 17, referred to event organiser Sir Bob Geldof as Bob Gandalf. And Busted's James Bourne, 21, was left red-faced after asking: 'Who's that?' when he spotted the scruffy singer. You can't really blame them. Joss wasn't even born when the orginial song was released and James was just a baby. [More]
