Blind man’s battles formed him for ministry

Steven Gastreich recently earned his master's degree in theology.
CALLED TO SERVE - Steven Gastreich (foreground), pictured with his parents, Bob and Maddie Gastreich, recently earned his master's degree in theology from the Sacred Heart School of Theology, Hales Corners. Blind since birth, Steven plans to become a chaplain. (Catholic Herald photo by Sam Lucero).

For some, rejection after rejection may seem a daunting battle to overcome. For Steven Gastreich, he realizes that the rejections were part of God's plan that led him to the Sacred Heart School of Theology, where he recently earned a master's degree in theology.

Steven was born prematurely and has been blind since birth. That did not deter him, however, as he earned a bachelor's degree from UW-Whitewater. He has been accepted into the clinical pastoral experience program at Alexian Village, the first step to becoming a chaplain. Steven expects that his life experiences will help him be a better minister to those with whom he will work.
