After months in Beta, Second Life for Macintosh OSX.3 is officially available for download. Mac loyalists have a well-deserved reputation for artistic talent, which pretty much makes them perfect candidates for Second Life. Residents skilled in Photoshop®, Poser ®, and other Mac-friendly tools are highly valued by the community, because these skills are directly translatable into innumerable in-world projects, from architecture to custom animations to fashion. And there's already a large welcome wagon, waiting for them: one of Second Life's biggest support groups is the aptly-named Macintosh Users.

A brief report from the cutting edge of in-world game development.

Clashing swords, fiery cannons, and exploding asteroids await you, in the new games from the wild minds of Second Life. Neverland, the three-sim theme park from the Spellbound group, is a tribute to J.M. Barrie on the 100th anniversary of his beloved novel Peter Pan, and it's so spectacular, it even garnered admiring coverage from the New York Times (see below). But it's also the place for numerous theme-specific games. Enjoy a round of darts in Olde London's pub, for example, or a fierce bout of pirate-style fencing, near Captain Hook's armada.

If you’re someone who prefers old school arcade games, Green Fate is happy to oblige. “Space Rocks of Death”, hosted on his private island of Tantalum, is a little like the classic quarter-gobbling “Asteroids”, except in full 3D, played right from the cockpit of your own starfighter.

Meanwhile, starting in early December, one of the most ambitious in-world games will soon be selecting Beta testers from a lottery drawing. Bedazzled, the group who brought us the popular “Sim Horror” adventure game for Halloween, are hard at work on a new game inspired by the “Unreal Tournament” games and other classic shooters, featuring team-based first-person combat in a fantastic world.

And we do mean fantastic. Don’t believe us? Check out some of the early development screenshots, to your right. Or this pitch from Foxy Xevious, Bedazzled’s team leader:

“Stunning photo-realistic scenery with places to hide and places to find add-ons (weapons, etc.), visionary new concepts of how to use the SL-given particle and texturing systems,” Ms. Xevious tells the Opinion. (That’s her, posing with the flamethrower.) “Prepare for a breathtaking experience with this extreme multi-player first person shooter powered by the technology of the Seburo weapons system. Be involved and apply for beta testing!” Instant Message Foxy Xevious for a chance to get in early on some in-world fragging.

Red State Bush supporters meet with Blue State Bush opponents, Stage turns Purple
See how other folks are handling the US presidential election's aftermath. Embedded journalist Hamlet Linden recently convened “Red Staters Meet the World”, an event to bring Bush supporters from Red states together with Bush opponents around the world. It was an evening of spirited conversation, and maybe a little more agreement than you'd think. Highlights from the event will be featured throughout the Thanksgiving week in New World Notes, Hamlet Linden's blog.
