NotiSur is one of four electronic newsletters distributed by the Latin America Data Base (LADB). LADB was created in 1985 with the objective of generating timely, comprehensive information on the region easily accessible and affordable to scholars, businesspeople, activists, and government officials.

NotiSur, published the second and fourth Wednesdays of the month, summarized news and analysis on divers political conflicts and issues. NotiSur topical coverage includes human rights, political parties and elections, indigenous issues, drug trafficking, environment, land tenure, military affairs, women, rebel activities, corruption, social welfare, multilateral initiatives, and labor union policy and organizing, among others.

Publication content comes from four main categories, most of which are monitored on a daily basis: 1) international wire services-- ACAN-EFE, Agence France Presse, Associated Press, Canadian Press, Central News Agency-Taiwan, Deutsche Presse- Agentur, Knight Ridder Financial News, Kyodo, OPECNA, Notimex, Reuter, and Xinhua; 2) RTTY broadcasts from Latin America, including Prensa Latina (Cuba) and TELAM (Argentina); 3) official reports, including those issued by BANAMEX, Banco de Mexico, ECLAC, IMF, and the Instituto Nacional de Estadistica Geografia y Informatica; and 4)selected newspapers, including Mexico's El Economista, El Financiero, El Nacional, Excelsior, Mexico City News, Novedades, and Uno Mas Uno.

LADB staff writers digest source materials to produce original articles, a process that consists of translating data and other information derived from Latin American nations; checking sources for inconsistencies and then verifying for accuracy; and combining sources articles--some of which span several days or weeks-- to produce chronologies and summaries.

The UCSD site license for NotiSur permits UCSD personnel to receive, distribute, reproduce, and store the newsletter for reading, research, or classroom purposes. In addition to being available here on the WWW, the newsletter is also available in printed form in the UCSD SS&H; Library. Also, anyone with a UCSD electronic mail address may subscribe and receive all issues directly my e- mail. For information on subscribing, send the message "help" by e-mail to listserv@ucsd.

In 1986, LADB began distributing two electronic publications, the Chronicle of Latin American Economics Affair and the Central America Update. Since then, LADB has added two new titles, SouceMex - Economic news & analysis on Mexico and NotiSur - South American & Caribbean Political Affairs.

The site licenses for all four of these newsletters are paid for by the UCSD Libraries.
