  • Stock Market Crash of 1929-Learn about the disastrous crash that lead to the Great DepressionAlthough the town had been rid of three troublesome outlaws, the people of Tombstone were not happy about the violent events of October 26. Many believed that the gunfight was murder disguised as crime fighting. Immediately after the shoot-out, town sheriff John E. Behan issued warrants for the arrest of Wyatt Earp and Doc Holliday. Justice of the Peace Wells Spicer reviewed the case for thirty days, and finally decided that there was not enough evidence to charge Earp and Holliday with murder. They were released. Although Virgil Earp was not arrested, he was dismissed from his duties as town marshal and criticized for having deputized his brothers.

The violence was far from over. On November 28--just over one month after the gunfight--Virgil was ambushed on his way into the Oriental Saloon. Shot by an unidentified gunman, he was disabled for life. In March 1882, Morgan was shot and killed. Wyatt and his brother Warren tracked and killed a number of men they believed to be responsible for the shootings.

Now labeled a murderer, Wyatt fled first to Colorado and then to assorted boomtowns in the West--from Idaho to Arizona and Alaska. In 1888, after Mattie Earp died, Earp married his third wife (and longtime girlfriend) Josephine Sarah Marcus. Wyatt eventually settled in California, where he became a familiar figure at the horse racing tracks. He mingled with movie stars and lived to a ripe old age. He died on January 13, 1929, at the age of eighty--having outlived every one of his four brothers.
