GMail Code Hints at Coming Feature
submitted by Gala 7 days ago (via http://blogs.zdnet.com/Google/...)
Looking at the GMail's javascript source gives a pretty good hint that Google is developing a service that will let you use GMail as a server rather than just a client, similar to what Yahoo provides. This article walks us through what he has found and imagines how a service like this would work.

#1: forward all email from accountyouwant@yourdomain.com to youraccount@gmail.com via your webhost cpanel.
#2: under ACCOUNTS in gmail add accountyouwant@yourdomain.com
#3: receive email (right in your gmail inbox) and activate.
#4: you can now receive and send (drop down menu when composing email) from ANY email address you want... from ANY domain you control.
Google shall rule the world one day...
Go to google using IE, then using Firefox.
I can now use the sidebar thing to scroll through all the google features using IE, but not in Firefox.
You get the same thing?
I think it may.

I have a gmail addy and an old hotmail addy via live mail beta, and I like the MS version much more, looks similar to the yahoo beta, don't have a yahoo account though to compare.
I get the feeling everyone is gunning for google and at present google is riding on its good rep a little too much, execution of late has seemed below competitors IMO.
Those who say "we're not evil", typically turn out to be......
There was a news story on the front page a couple minutes ago titled something like "Looks like Google has hired a graphics designer." And the summary was about how Google might be redesigning some of their sites (Google video?) and how Kevin and someone else can't complain about the lack of design anymore.
Anyway, ITS GONE. I reloaded Diggs front page, intending to click on this story right after, and it dissapeard. Ive done a couple searches for it, and looked further down the front page for it.. but it's GONE.
It had over 500 Diggs.. what happened??

The issue with TomPetty's method is, when you do this, most other (gmail doesn't) mail programs will show "Sent on Behalf Of xxx@gmail.com" - which a lot of people don't even know that it is sending out, could cause some problems.
Ummm... I have been using GMAIL as a SMTP and POP(ssl) server for a long time..
This is pretty well know as a good way to get around restricive ISP's who block outgoing port 25. The gmail servers even support addition ports to get around most any filtering.
Here is how:

... ummm, aren't google the only search engine who *weren't* handing over information?
Actually it was AOL who cared more about their customers..
With the AOL hook-up I see AOL googlify their whole site and ridding AOL of the awful fat client that it famous for. That will benefit AOL greatly and give google more visibility.

I think you may be a bit off track.
At an O'Reilly eTech (Emerging Technology) conference last year in San Diego, I happened to end up sitting next to Peter Norvig -- Google's Director of Research http://www.norvig.com/ -- as he typed away on his laptop. I couldn't help but notice he was using an email client called "Caribou" for what appeared to be his work email client. I also noticed it was *very* similar to Gmail, which by then was widely available. Caribou appears to be Google's internal email client, used by all of its Employees. It doesn't surprise me that you would find reference to that name within Gmail's code.
Maybe you're on to something with the "manage this domain" bit, but I think you get off track when concentrating on the Caribou reference. It could even be that the domain management code is used within Google to manage their own internal domains and subdomains, which their various divisions may use with Caribou...

Interesting...I notice it's no longer in my profile either. So much for the lamed-off-the-fp excuse.
I'm glad you replied. I just realized Digg needs a general forum to talk about stuff like this!
So I'm guessing you dugg this story, and it dissapeared from your profile history as well? That's very odd. Sounds like it was taken down by an admin...?
What was the story about anyway, were there screenshots of a leaked design?

google is starting to get out-hustled more and more these days
So then the admins must not have had anything to do with the dissapearence... it must just be a glitch. But I still can't find this article through search... how did you access the digg URL, Gala?
Also.. talk like this is better suited for a message board. I hope Digg gets one soon!

You give yourself to much credit. There are a quarter billion people in the United States. The government has neither the interest nor resources to get everyone and their brother's Gmail/Search History/Whatever ... Let your so-called privacy issue go.
I've notified digg support about this missing story.
(and asked about a message board too!)
