Sunday 7th - A Quick Trip To Something SpecialI went down to south Kilkenny today with the express purpose of visiting one site - the spectaular remains of a passage tomb on Bawnfree Hill above Knockoliver. While I was there I took the opportunity to pop back to the highcrosses at Ahenny (County Tipperary). I also stopped off at a couple of other places on the way home.
The tomb on Bawnfree Hill is absolutely amazing. It's one of those that I can't understand why I haven't heard more about it. The hill is a popular place for walkers, so some news should have filtered through, surely? I spoke to the farmer on the way up and he said there were always people up here. So, come on. If you know of any great sites that are still out there waiting let me know! It's obvious that this area is generally 'unsung' as the nearby decorated tomb at Knockroe (County Kilkenny) was only discovered by the establishment in the 1990s! The wealth of early Christian stuff has obviously overshadowed this wealth of much earlier stuff in the minds of the archaeos. I can't wait to see what else comes to light. |
