It just goes to show you that it's easy to not know much about where you live that this stone stands just 15 minutes walk from my old house and I only found out about it a couple of weeks ago.

I would say it's 50/50 whether this is prehistoric or a modern cattle scratching post. In most parts of the country its square section would tend to make you think it's more recent, but around here we have several examples like this, such as those at Rockbrook. Like those at Rockbrook this stone is about 1.6m tall.

Finding it wasn't as striaght forward as I'd assumed it would be, but it is actually very easy to reach. Just opposite Kilgobbin castle there is a small road. if you go down this lane the stone is roughly 150m beyond the 'Private No Entry' sign (that I didn't see until on my way out ... honest) in the field to the left just after the bungalow.
