Directions

A tricky one to find now that the lane layout has changed. Head north from Dundalk along the N1 and then head east along the R173. About 50m after the junction with the R174. Pull in here and follow the newly tarmaced lane through the bungalows until it turns to grass. Park here and walk up the lane. Just after the cowshed on the left there is a little path. Take this and the tomb is on your right just after you pass the end of the high wall.

This tomb is massive. Its gallery must be 15m in length segmented into 5 chambers.

A nearby wall cuts through the cairn but the is now a nice protective wall around the rest and so hopefully it may well stay away from further harm.

The stones are so low and in such disarray that there may not be a lot visible when the grass grows in the summer.

Still, that aside, a great place to be recommended to anyone. Wish I had it in my back garden!

When I visited this site before I didn't really understand it. I knew it was a double court tomb, but its layout confused me. For this reason I've being trying to find the time to come back ever since. I hadn't planned on that being today, but I was in the area and The Round Mountain had just caught my eye from Clermont Cairn portal tomb and I wanted to see if it was also a possible focus for this site. It is!

Luckily the grass around the stones has been recently cut allowing a good view of the layout of the galleries. It appears that the wide end of the southern gallery is actually behind the rear of the north gallery. This would mean that the northern gallery was built in front of the other one. Very unusual. I would like to see any excavation reports available for this one.
