  • Harry Wedge continues with new trends
    (21 April) - Kerri-Lee Barry
Cowra born Wiradjuri artist, Harry Wedge's paintings portray Indigenous life and issues distinctively with figures and landscapes outlined in contrasting colours on vibrant backgrounds.
While his work presents issues in a seemingly naive style the messages hit hard, including stories about Adam and Eve, the legacies of Captain Cook, colonialism and the effects of christianity, to urban Aboriginal issues such as alcoholism. He also paints beautiful narratives of his childhood at Erambie Mission in West Cowra, NSW.

Harry started painting in 1989, studied at Sydney's Eora Centre TAFE college for Visual and Performing Art and graduated in 1993. His first solo exhibition was in 1991 and he was an integral member of the urban contemporary Aboriginal art movement initiated by Boomalli Aboriginal Artists Co-operative in Sydney.

A new exhibition on display at the Albury Regional Art Gallery titled "New Trends" features a selection of works from contemporary Aboriginal artists around the country and such diverse communities as Papunya, Balgo Hills, Utopia and Turkey Creek.

Featured artists include, the Petyarre family (Greeny Purvis and Margaret), Brook Andrew, Pantjiti Mary McLean, Jimmy Njiminjuma, Minnie Pwerle, Jean Baptiste Aguatimi, Leah King Smith and Christian Thompson. Through his artwork, Brook comments on global and regional perspectives on race, politics, celebrity and capitalism through a photomedia and text aesthetic.

Brook exhibits internationally and has collections in major National Galleries. He has produced public art works such as Wilbing (a series of 3 patterned boomerangs) at Walama the Sydney International Airport forecourt, Seven Spears at the Sydney 200 Olympic Games Shooting Centre and Rivervisions at the Casula Powerhouse Museum. He is currently studying a PhD at the College of Fine Arts, UNSW.

Brook's latest exhibition, kalar midday - the land of three rivers - reflects a dark, dreamlike landscape inhabited by enigmatic figures, birds, and animals. These sensual images explore blackness and evoke the relationship that exists between the land and its people. Also included in this exhibition are works from Brook's Indian suite taken during his 2001 residency in New Delhi, India as well as recent neon works.
