I have recently purchased Guild Wars and I wish to play it, but sadly,
everytime I play it, the computer crashes to a black screen, after some
lines appearing. The computer stays on, but, the graphics are non
existant, and therefore I cannot operate the computer, leaving me no
option but to turn it off.
My computer's specifications are:
Processor - Pentium 4 3.0GHz Processors
RAM - 1024Mb RAM
Hard Drive - 200Gb Hard Drive
Primary Screen - 19" Monitor (TFT)
Operating System - Windows XP Home Edition SP2
Graphics Card - 256MB ATi Radeon 9800 Pro Graphics
DVD Drive - NEC DVD RW ND 3500AG (DVD Rewriter)
DVD Drive - IDE DVD-ROM 16x (DVD-ROM Drive)
Can anyone help me?
Thanks in advance

Yeah, I have both of those. By the way, it happens in all modern games, not just Guild Wars.

What version of DirectX do you have? If it's not the newest, try updating it. Do you know if what the cause of the crash is (i.e. gfx, sound, device conflict, etc)? Are you sure it's the card?

I am pretty certain it is the graphics, and I have the newest DirectX.

Sounds like a failed graphics card.
Try experimenting with the DX API and see if creating any D3D Surface causes the card to crash, then try it with OpenGL.

Sounds sensible, I have had to have the card repaired by the manufacturer (Tiny, which now is non existant) becuase of some problem, I admit that it was a different one, but maybe it was damaged or something.
I have played Flight Simulator 98 at full graphics, I mean everything turned up to highest, without any failures; this could be because it is very old though.

What happens in dxdiag if you run the DirectDraw and Direct3D tests?

FS98 doesn't use hardware acceleration on a modern machine, as far as I can tell. I had to change an option on my old machine to get it hardware accelerated, even.

FS98 doesn't use 3D hardware acceleration, IIRC. Some of the other games might be using OpenGL. But as CRS said, try running dxdiag's tests.

Looks like VPU overheating.
Try to clean video card. Reapply cooler. Try to play with opened case.
Try to change video card if nothing is working. It's time for 9800. 9800 series are too old.

verify your driver version.... if its one ver below the current then upgrade... if not..upgrade to one version below the current version .... and then to the latest if not fixed... blank screens are usually a driver version problem and often occur from failed drivers....
GuildWars is not too new to be playing on a 9800 as many of my friends play it constantly on 9800's and even 9550's.....
not personally an MMORPG fan..... CS is more my style

I was going to refer you to guildwarsguru.com but I see you've already been there.
I've owned a couple of different Radeon cards in my time, each one always had problems with 80% of my games (and OpenGL apps), except Guild Wars.
Suffice to say, earlier this year I bought an nVidia and I haven't had a single issue with it so far.
