VPN + Map Network Drive + Picture Preview View = URHGH!!!

Just a random rant on XP:
I'm VPNing into a network (over my decently fast cable modem connection to the net), and I'm mapping a network drive there.  Navigating around the mapped drive is hard enough (decently slow), but when I get into a picture folder, the thing gets *very* slow and tries to preview all the pictures for me and turns into a morass of slowness.  URGH!

This is because Windows designers in their desire to be as helpful as possible decided to treat remote files the same way as the local ones. But even with the current network speeds you cannot make this kind of assumption, and the original intent backfires. You just cannot treat remote files the same way as local files. Any VPN user will know what I mean.

The least Windows Explorer could do is to turn off previews and file/folder tooltips for remote files by default. Alas, Explorer is not that clever.

Yes, I understand that quite well.  To client apps, a network drive must look exactly the same as a local drive.  Otherwise, the application code would get more convuluted than it already is.

I'm just frustrated with how bad the perf can get... even local picture folders seem to really slow down... I like the previews, but sometimes rendering them takes longer than it should.

I dunno, is it going to fix it?
