True to its goal of uniting organizations across U.S. and Canada, the Alzheimer's Foundation of America opens membership to organizations and companies dedicated to aiding individuals with Alzheimer's disease and related illnesses, and their caregivers and families. We welcome entities of any size budget and staff, nonprofit and for profit. Membership and associate membership are available.
By standing together for care, AFA members and associate members give a stronger voice to the urgency of our message. By collaborating with each other, they ensure that the public receives optimal education and resources. And by taking advantage of AFA's larger scope, they receive guidance and resources that are usually unattainable by local, grassroots organizations.
Just some examples of the benefits of AFA membership:
- With grant monies from AFA, an organization in Birmingham, AL provides scholarships that enable families-in-need to enroll their loved ones in adult day programs; an agency in Gulfport, MS distributes critical resource manuals to caregivers and healthcare professionals; and a provider on Long Island, NY utilizes a sport physiologist to enhance an exercise program for individuals with dementia.
- AFA's legislative advocacy efforts helped secure additional funding for Florida's 11 memory clinics in 2004.
- Member organizations across the country provide free, confidential memory screenings to thousands of Americans each year who are concerned about memory loss, as part of AFA's annual National Memory Screening Day.
- Following President Reagan's death in June 2004, local organizations were able to quickly and easily gather community residents together for moving candle lighting remembrances, by implementing sample marketing materials, program agendas and other suggestions developed and distributed by AFA.
- In the aftermath of Hurricane Charley in August 2004, fellow Florida members rushed to the aid of a member organization in Fort Meyer, FL that was inundated with clients in crisis, providing an extra set of hands, respite for staff—and emotional support.
No one should face this disease alone—including organizations dedicated to dementia care.
