At the theatre workshop "Emigration," participants explore the issue of
emigration through acting. The workshop combines theoretical and
emotional learning.
As an introduction to the topic, participants are shown keepsakes of
the Simon family, who left Germany in 1939 aboard the ocean liner
"Imperial" heading for Chile. These objects illustrate the plight of
Jews in Germany in the 1930s as well as the conditions and
opportunities for emigration. Via the "Axis of Exile," participants
proceed to the "Garden of Exile" in the basement of the Libeskind
building: the labyrinthine arrangement of cement steles here conveys
the lack of orientation and uprooted existences of those in exile. This
physical experience is the prelude to a staged play in which the
participants develop fictive situations based on historical reality.
