Objects for the Jewish Museum Berlin

For many years, material donated by Jewish individuals and families has made up a major part of the collection of the Jewish Museum Berlin. The permanent exhibition on German-Jewish history was, in large parts, made possible by the generous donations of numerous donors from around the world.

Following the opening, the museum's collection will continue to grow and also be thematically extended for temporary exhibitions and research projects. The museum is especially interested in three dimensional objects, but also in photographs and documents as well as in graphic arts, paintings and textiles. At present, we are searching in particular for material pertinent to the following themes:

Life in Germany

  • Professional and business life: photographs of businesses and products, professional utensils (e.g. medical instruments, craftsman's tools), identifiable products from Jewish businesses; company correspondence, advertisements, brochures, employer's references, certificates of distinction
  • Historical photographs of Jewish institutions (synagogues, schools, cemeteries, etc.)
  • Jewish religious and social life (activities in community associations, charitable societies, fraternities, etc.); religious objects; material related to the celebration of Hanukkah/Christmas ("Weihnukkah")
  • Jewish rural life: (e.g. rural communities in Southern Germany; rural businesses, cattle trade, contact and relationships with the rural Christian population)

Life in Exile

Arrival in new countries and establishment of a new existence; professional and personal developments, German-Jewish milieus, membership in various associations (e.g. Landsmannschaften), contact to post-war Germany, the transmission of family history and its impact on the second and third generations

Do you have any objects that may, directly or indirectly, symbolize the "new" life in the country of exile?

If you would like to support the Jewish Museum Berlin and feel that you have material of interest to us, we kindly ask you to send a list of objects along with a brief description of your family history.
