The one segment of games publishers can count on to generate interest on an annual basis is sports titles.

Every year, dedicated sports gamers slap down $20 to $60 for what sometimes are marginal upgrades of their favorite sports games. But the playing fields are beginning to change as publishers lock up long-term commitments for various sports.

Electronic Arts has locked up the rights to pro football. But Take-Two Interative Software Inc. is fighting back by securing an exclusive deal with the Major League Baseball Players Association.
