For the fourth summer running – this year from 14 May to 13 September –
the Museum Garden at the Jewish Museum Berlin will be transformed into
a stage for readings, concerts, chess tournaments and much more. The
Cultural Summer is a highlight of the Jewish Museum’s annual calendar
and this year – besides the old-time favorites such as readings by
famous actresses and Jazz in the Garden – it focuses on Sigmund Freud,
the founder of psychoanalysis, and football.
Football-related events include a multi-cultural football tournament
for Berlin primary school children, an evening in honor of Hans
Rosenthal as well as one with the popular football commentator Marcel
Reif, who will read passages from historical sports pages. Further
highlights are readings by the actresses Iris Berben, Hannelore Elsner,
and Brigitte Grothum. The last weekend in May focuses on Sigmund Freud
and the couch while in June, Berlin’s chess elite will gather in the
Museum Garden. Jazz fans can look forward to the concert with the old
master of swing, Coco Schumann, who will play jazz standards from
Lester Young to Antonio Carlos Jobim with his quartet. As in summers
past, the Museum Garden becomes at times a picnic meadow, at others a
concert hall, and at others still the perfect spot for lounging on the
deck-chairs provided.
The Jewish Museum Berlin cordially invites you to attend the festive
opening of the fourth Cultural Summer which will kick off with the
installation "Well-Deserved Yet Still Forgotten. Jews in German
Football." Following this, Oriental specialties prepared by
Liebermann’s Restaurant can be enjoyed to live music by the "Kings of
Klezmer" – the Rosenthal & Ginzburg duo.
A colorful program including a Museum rally and T-shirt printing will
be on offer from noon to 6 pm to celebrate the opening of the new
"Children’s Island" in the permanent exhibition. Children under 12
enjoy free entrance on this day.
