The mind does not ever remain
in a vacuum. Different thoughts arise from a variety of factors - the current
situation at work place or home that is keeping you engrossed, past events or
memories, future plans and desires, and even a passing sight.
One's
mood, behaviour and action largely depend on the nature of thought that passes
through the mind. A series of sad thoughts significantly dampen energy, create
pensiveness and at times, lead to depression. Thoughts of being mistreated,
cheated or oppressed fuel the feeling of hatred and vengeance against the
offender; and lead to anguish and even violence. As against this, thoughts of
love, care, and camaraderie bring calmness and sobriety.
It is
important to rein your thoughts to prevent the disturbance of mind and
undesirable behaviour. But, how to attain this in today's fast and complex
modern day life?
Often there are times when stray thoughts come to
your mind and you indulge in them. For example, when you are travelling from
home to work, or returning from work to home or spending a lazy respite, you may
have disjointed and inane thoughts that may have a bearing on your action and
words. During such periods try to concentrate on chanting prayers of the
Universal Lord. Begin with silently reciting the name of the Lord or a prayer
that you cherish. Make a vow to diligently endeavour to build this as a routine
activity. Initially, there will be distractions. As you continue to practise
this, distractions will disappear and you will develop the art of conquering
your thoughts and lead them in the right direction.
The outcome is a
serene mind, balanced behaviour and a soothing feeling of tranquillity. It
provides you strength to appropriately face different situations. This keeps the
mind at peace and the body healthy - and these have become vitally necessary in
the din and bustle of present day life.
The renowned spiritual
guru, Sri
Ramakrishna Paramahansha who
spoke in commonly understandable down to earth language said, “
Emancipation of mankind in the
kaliyug
lies in chanting the name of the Supreme Lord”. Follow this path
and be relieved from being plagued with distracting thoughts and, in the
process, losing sight of the right direction in life.
