It's more a case of "All of the above".

Interesting to see that students are the second largest demographic here, which I am a part of.

Kudos to all you students who are a part of Channel9 and other developer communities.  You are the ones that are Industry-aware and know there is more to this than just syntax and semantics.   A lot of students are content in simply learning material to get a degree.

There are quite a few professional programmers who are little more than monkeys flipping switches and watching lights turn on and off.  They sit there and are bemused at what they can do.   It's encouraging to see students showing a deeper interest in this intricate skill.  You guys (and girls) seem to be on the right path.

I think you are over estimating a lot of us... I come here to complain about Microsoft (and rarely to praise them)... I don't give two hoots about the industry, in fact I'd much prefer it if I could keep just coding without having to worry about all the bull associated with 'the big picture'.

Manip, you just have a contrary disposition.  That's not necessarily a bad thing.  It draws attention, comments, and at times spurs  healthy critical thinking.   I prefer not to be that way 90% of the time.   I dislike it when people post contrary arguments after doing simple surface scans on topics.    I think a "Did you get past the 3rd  minute of thinking this through?" yes|no question would be appropriate for each posting.   Most complaints do come from people who don't understand the big picture and don't know what's going on at lower levels.

Even though you've said you come here to complain, I still say kudos to you for contributing to the developer community.   The comments I made about complainers are not directed toward you, but to those to whom the comments apply (makes sense, eh?)

Please note: Just as writing does not make you a writer, the fact that I have complained about complainers does not make me a complainer.

Well, I am a mechanical engineer, and most parts of my professional work are irrelevant to computers

I chose Developer. I analyze analog electronics and write assembly language software for automotive ECUs.

No  "other"? Trying to cram us all into a box? What about us Artists, those free thinker types?

I chose Developer.

Hey, Da Vinci was a developer as well as an artist.

I put down student, which is debatable. From a developer point of view I am a student, for I am still studying it. Professionally I am a system administrator.

But I also like the answer Albert Einstein gave to someone who didn't know him and asked him what he was or did. He said he was a student of physics.
That holds true for most IT functions: we'll always be students (with a job on the side).

I'm a proud student member of Channel 9
I dunno why I do it, I just like to make things I guess, I also do graphics.
But it's not so accesible for students because of the high prices of most products, and I can only have freeware..

So I started last month with C# Express, and I like it a lot

Huh, none of those apply to me. I use computers for graphics/audio/video stuff allot so I guess I would fit more into a designer category. My REAL job is very fishy (meaning that I work in dead fish).
I also do WAY too much fixing of other people's computers.

Yeah. What about all us people who sit at home and do nothing but post on forums all day
