Thursday—Mission Bay Aquatic Sportscenter Details

Mission Bay Sportcenter is a 7,000 square foot facility and is recognized as the finest location in San Diego for beach and water-oriented activities. The Sportcenter has the reputation as a safe and fun learning environment for children to develop new skills and interact socially, physically and emotionally with other students at our camp. What sets Mission Bay Sportcenter apart from other aquatic camps are the camp ratios of 6 students per instructor, keeping the groups small to ensure students' ability to learn quickly and safely.

At the beginning of each activity the instructor will sit down with the students and do a chalk talk about the specific activity that they are about to learn. The instructor will walk through the activity with the students for hands-on learning experience. Then they are off!

  • Activities

The children will be able to choose two options from the following activities, offered as structured classes:

    • Ages 6–8: Kayaking & sailing
    • Ages 8–10: Kayaking, sailing, wind surfing
    • Ages 10–16: Kayaking, sailing, wind surfing
    • All ages afternoon class: Body boarding

Students must wear Mission Bay Sportcenter-provided flotation devices (life vests) when on water craft. All-day chaperones will accompany the campers.

    Morning classes: 9 am–12 noon
    Lunch: 12 noon–1 pm
    Beach activity instruction: 1–4 pm

    Kayaking (all ages)
Kayaking is a great way for the children to be introduced to being on the water and feeling safe and secure. The children always have their lifesaving vests on and will be in control of their own kayaks. Accompanied by our instructor right beside them, they will go on a tour of beautiful Mission Bay. Along the way they will go over proper paddling techniques and will learn about the Marine science life here in Mission Bay. (We offer Tandem as well as Triple person kayaks for children who are smaller or not as comfortable in the water).

    Junior Sailing (all ages)
Designed as an introduction to the concept of sailing. This class follows the same structure as our basic sailing class, though it is geared to the younger student.
*Basic Swimming skills and feeling comfortable in the water are a must.*

Wind Surfing (ages 8–10 and 10–16)
Designed for all levels of wind surfers. Certified instructors use special teaching methods and equipment, including a dry land simulator that makes learning proper techniques fun and easy. With the Sportcenter being situated right on the water's edge, we use a protected cove that makes for a great and safe place to learn. Topics covered include safety, rigging, right of way rules and sailing theory. Advanced students will be given personalized instruction allowing them the opportunity to sharpen basic skills, and experience racing theory.
*The minimum weight requirement is 70 lbs.*
