Membership

Your membership, support, and participation in the Small House Society is vital. As membership continues to grow, the Small House Society is able to more effectively join with other organizations to lobby against legislation that would hinder the small house movement. Membership is only $5 per year. To join, simply send $5 along with your name, address, e-mail, and other pertinent information to the address indicated below. Your contribution of $5 helps defray the costs of operation and supports the continued work of the Small House Society. (The $5 is presently a one-time nonrefundable gift).

History of the Small House Society

In the fall of 2002, the Small House Society was founded by Jay Shafer, Shay Salomon, Nigel Valdez, and Gregory Johnson. These four individuals were able to draw from their collective experience in housing design, home building, urban planning, and organizational management. The society was soon joined by other like minded individuals and organizations. Today, Gregory Johnson serves as the coordinator of the organization. The core board of advisors currently consists of Jay, Shay, Nygel, and Gregory. However, as a cooperatively run organization, all members have significant influence and serve as our larger advisory board.

The Mobile Hermitage

The Mobile Hermitage is a freestanding moveable miniature house that operates entirely from battery power. This totally functional miniature house is an all-season habitat large enough for one or two (very compatible) adults.

Despite its name, the Mobile Hermitage is designed to be part of a community of tiny houses. Interdependent freestanding small houses are very economical to build and maintain. By sharing common resources such as laundry, restroom facilities, bath house, large kitchen, and activity center, a greater sense of community is established, and significant savings can be achieved.
