  • Greg Johnson - Biography Page. Based on early visitor feedback, the biography page has been modified. • Nation-wide toll-free calling for Verizon and Sprint PCS customers. On Tuesday, 16 May 2006, Resources for Life announced a new telecommunications initiative which allows callers on the Verizon and Sprint PCS networks to call by using same-network phones which does not count against mobile calling plan minutes. This initiative also means that Resources for Life team members can be reached in more regions by overlaying the coverage area maps for two of the largest nation-wide wireless providers. It also allows us to have unlimited free calls to and from anyone within these networks - significantly reducing our costs. This enhancement will also allow us to better support users of these phone networks because we will be more familiar with their use. We will be evaluating these and other wireless network providers over the next two years considering ease of use, cost, coverage, phone quality, customer service, and other factors. If you are a Verizon or Sprint PCS customer, click here to contact us for more details. (20060517we2059)

Power will be obtained from solar, wind, or another other renewable source. (20060515mo1131)

Immediately below is an archive of recent entries during the 72 hours
following the recent tornados that damaged the Iowa City community.

  • Support of Tornado Victims Continues. Now is has been three days since the tornado damage occurred. If you don't know of anyone directly impacted, consider supporting individual, organizations, and/or businesses who are experiencing secondary impact. Contact us if you are interested in helping those impacted by the tornado damage. (Posted: 20060416su1400)
  • Damage Assessment and Action. After having had time to assess the city-wide damages of Thursday evening's tornados (see photo journal below), Resources for Life joined a list of volunteers available for the Red Cross and other agencies. By Friday afternoon we were on a volunteer e-mail list being notified of where the demand for volunteer help was most needed. (Posted: 20060414fr1830)
  • Iowa City Tornado Damage - Photo Journal. The Resources for Life 24-Hour News Team has photographs from the recent tornado damage that are now online. Click here to view the page now. (Posted: 20060414fr1302)
  • Iowa City Emergency Relief Effort. (Posted: 20060414fr1115) The following four relief contact resources were just received from Senator Joe Bolkom via e-mail.
    • City of Iowa City. If you have carpentry, electrical, or plumbing skills or can operate heavy equipment, you can call the City 356-5200 and they will put you on a list to help as needed.
    • Salvation Army. You may also call the Salvation Army who is coordinating volunteers. Their number is 337-3725. They will take your name and number and call back when they can send you to help.
    • Red Cross. The Red Cross can use your help if you a TRAINED Red Cross volunteer call 337-2119 or Toll Free: (800) 982-2438. Otherwise, the best way to support American Red Cross disaster relief efforts is through a monetary donation. The American Red Cross is not set up to sort and distribute collections of food, clothing or other items. It is difficult to transport and sort collections at a disaster site, as it requires lots of time, money and personnel. We recommend that these types of items be given to local food banks or agencies who are equipped for such donations. To contribute to the American Red Cross, you can mail a check or money order to:
American Red Cross Grant Wood Area Chapter, PO Box 10375, Cedar Rapids, IA 52410-0375. You may also donate by phone by calling (319) 393-3500.
    • University of Iowa. If you know any UI staff, professors, or students:
UI students who are without shelter may go the Iowa Memorial Union and the Second Floor Ballroom. The Red Cross has made mattresses available there. This shelter will be open only to UI students, who must show their ID. No one who is inebriated will be allowed in. University staff should plan to report to work as usual unless they are unable to do so because of the storm. In that case, staff members should notify their supervisors. Employees of units disrupted by the storms are encouraged to consult the UI's workplace policy within the Operations Manual at:
      http://www.uiowa.edu/~our/opmanual/v/16.htm#1611
If employees have other questions or are in need of assistance, contact Human Resources directly via its Website at: http://www.uiowa.edu/hr/contact.html

  • Website Index Pages Renamed. We previously used the filename 'Default.htm' when naming our index pages. This is the default provided by Microsoft Frontpage. However, it is not a globally accepted standard. We've now switched to using the more compatible and more standard 'index.htm' as the default file name for primary web pages in each area of our website. For this reason, visitors may end up at our home page until search engines have been updated. We apologize for the inconvenience. This disruption comes as a result of transitioning away from Windows to more open standards. In the long run, we hope it will provide a more consistent and stable experience for our visitors. (20030712sa1421)
  • Yahoo Web Hosting - No Longer Endorsed. Due to repeated unaddressed and unresolved problems with our e-mail service through Yahoo Web Hosting, it has been necessary to discontinue our support of Yahoo Web Hosting. • Life Radio - An End to Democracy and Free Speech? The FCC recently received over 500,000 e-mail messages, phone calls, faxes, and letters protesting a ruling that would allow corporate interests to further own and control our media including the authority to censor content. Thousands of protesters were in the streets representing conservative and liberal organizations with membership in the millions. One representative of the FCC responded by saying that the FCC would pass the ruling and not respond to any public outcry against it. Many are concerned that such excessive corporate control is a threat to free speech and democracy. Click here to visit Life Radio. (20030604we2145)
