This page aims to list the areas in which Gentoo actively seeks to expand development efforts. Positions are open to both existing Gentoo developers and also those wishing to become a Gentoo developer. The priorities shown are sorted from highest to lowest.

This page does not list the only areas where contributions are welcome, but is only a reflection of where developers are needed the most. If you are interested in helping out in another area, then do not hesitate to contact the relevant development group anyway.

1 accessibility Requested on June 3, 2005 by Deedra Waters: Gentoo's accessibility project is in need of help with things such as ebuild maintenance, kernel hacking, and LiveCD creation. We're also in need of someone to assist with bug solving.
1 amd64 Requested on May 14, 2005 by Gerald J. Normandin Jr.: The Gentoo/AMD64 team is looking for documentation developers to assist with revamping and updating AMD64 documentation. Prospective candidates should have good language skills and be familiar with XML.
1 arm Requested on August 15, 2004 by Mike Frysinger: To get Gentoo on to ARM CPUs we need developers to undertake package testing, patching and general bug solving.
1 backup Requested on June 2, 2005 by Robin Hugh Johnson: The app-backup herd is looking for developers to work on creating and maintaining ebuilds for backup applications within Gentoo. Experience with tape drives or any backup software (esp. Bacula, Arkeia, Tivoli) considered a major plus, but anybody willing to learn and having reasonable ebuild skills will be considered. 1 desktop-misc, desktop-dock and desktop-wm Requested on June 5, 2006 by Krzysiek Pawlik: desktop-misc, desktop-dock and desktop-wm herds need new developers to help with ebuild maintenance, introducing new ebuilds into the tree and general bugfixing."
1 em64t Requested on January 25, 2005 by Mike Doty: The AMD64 team is looking for developers with the ability to maintain (bug-fix, test) packages for the EM64T hardware platform. These developers have access to or own Xeon boxes.
1 embedded Requested on August 15, 2004 by Nedd Ludd: To get Gentoo working on uClibc systems we need people to help with uClibc debugging, toolchains, developing tools, and generally architecture testing and patching.
1 gnome Requested on July 16, 2005 by John N. Laliberte: The GNOME herd needs people who want to help maintain packages and help with bug-solving.
1 GNUstep Requested on March 25, 2006 by Mark Loeser: Currently the GNUstep herd consists of one member and is in dire need of additional manpower to help maintain ebuilds and assist in bug squashing.
1 gps Requested on April 30, 2005 by Henrik Brix Andersen: The mobile herd needs a new maintainer for the GPS related ebuilds currently in portage - there's also a quite a few enhancement requests in bugzilla for GPS related ebuilds.
1 java Requested on July 24, 2005 by Karl Trygve Kalleberg: The Java team is looking for new developers to help with maintaining Java ebuilds. In particular, Eclipse and related tools, Enterprise Java applications and libraries and gcj need more attention.
1 net-fs Requested on August 15, 2004 by Ryan Phillips: There are a larger number of bugs related to network fileing systems that need solving.
1 netmon Requested on January 21, 2005 by Daniel Black: More developers are required to maintain network monitoring tools.
1 perl Requested on December 21, 2004 by Chris White: The Perl herd is looking for experienced candidates to help Perl bug solving.
1 ppc64 Requested on August 15, 2004 by Tom Gall: To get Gentoo on to 64 bit PPC CPUs we need developers to undertake package testing, patching and general bug solving.
1 s390 Requested on August 15, 2004 by S390 Team: To get Gentoo on to S390 CPUs we need developers to undertake package testing, patching and general bug solving.
1 sound Requested on August 15, 2004 by Jeremy Huddleston: To get Gentoo's large number of sound applications debugged and tested more developers are needed.
1 video Requested on August 15, 2004 by Chris White: To get Gentoo's large number of Video and DVD applications debugged and testinged more developers are needed.
1 wxwindows Requested on January 24, 2005 by Mark Loeser: The wxwindows herd needs developer(s) to help with package testing and maintenance.
1 x86 Requested on December 4, 2005 by Mark Loeser: In order to increase QA and handle stabilization requests in a more timely manner, the x86 arch team is looking for developers that are willing and able to test a wide variety of packages.
1 xemacs Requested on March 9, 2006 by Mark Loeser: The XEmacs herd is currently without any maintainers and has many open bugs that need to be resolved.
2 alpha Requested on October 23, 2004 by Bryan Oestergaard: The Alpha team is looking for developers with the ability to maintain (bug-fix, test) packages for the Alpha hardware platform. Ideally these developers have access to, or own, Alpha boxes.
2 bsd Requested on November 8, 2004 by Gentoo/BSD Team: The BSD team is looking for developers who have experience with both BSD and with GNU/Linux to help port Gentoo to the FreeBSD platform. The immediate focus is to have a working BSD baselayout.
2 security Requested on August 24, 2004 by the Gentoo Security Team: The Gentoo Security Team is seeking GLSA Coordinators to help with open security bugs that need solving.
2 toolchain Requested on August 15, 2004 by Mike Frysinger: There are a large number of bugs related to GCC, binutils and glibc that need to be solved.
2 utf8 Requested on October 23, 2004 by Seemant Kulleen: The UTF-8 team is looking to expand. We currently have only one developer on the team. The goal is to create a completely unicode-enabled Gentoo system.
2 voip Requested on August 15, 2004 by Stefan Knoblich: To further develop and support Voice over IP applications more developers are wanted.
3 comm-fax Requested on August 15, 2004 by Steve Arnold: Communication, fax, and related packages need a hand with maintenance.
