Why do I still get alerts after putting a computer in maintenance mode?

When a computer is put into maintenance mode, the database and the management server are updated immediately.  At that point, any server side responses including notification rules will not run.  The agent will be polling the MS on its polling interval (default = 5 min.) as usual looking for configuration updates.  Until the agent makes a configuration update, it will be unaware that it should be in maintenance.  It will continue to generate alerts and run responses until it gets a configuration update.  So - on average, by default an agent will continue to generate alerts for 2.5 minutes after being put into maintenance mode.  Similarly, on the flip side when an agent is taken out of maintenance mode, on average it will be 2.5 minutes before it starts to generate alerts and run responses again.

Tired of people stopping your MOM service? Want to increase MOM agent availability?

I hear reports quite often of people having trouble with MOM agents that get stopped or disabled by unwitting or mischievous server administrators.  MOM administrators have to respond to missing heartbeat alerts and start up the MOM service using the update agent settings task or worse, logging into the box and starting up the service manually.

You can put an end to all that using Group Policy!  Buy your AD administrator buddy lunch one day and ask him if he will create a simple Group Policy Object for you that will lock the MOM service down to a specific set of people which doesn't necessarily have to include local admins on the box.  :)

Here is how you do it:

1)  Log into a domain controller that has the MOM agent installed on it.

2)  Run mmc at the Run prompt

3)  Open the Add/Remove Snap-in dialog (File --> Add/Remove Snap-in)

4)  In the Add/Remove Snap-in dialog click Add... and choose 'Group Policy Object Editor' and click Add.

5)  In the Select Group Policy Object dialog, click Browse... and select the OU, Site, or Domain that you want to target the policy at.

6)  Either select an existing Group Policy Object that you want to modify or create a new one specifically for this by clicking on the New button.

7)  Click OK  Click Finish.  Click Close.  Click OK

8)  Expand the tree as follows:  Computer Configuration --> Windows Settings --> Security Settings --> System Services

9)  In the list of services in the results pane, right click on the MOM service and choose Properties.

10)  In the properties dialog, check the 'Define this policy setting' checkbox.

11)  Select Automatic startup mode

12)  Click Edit Security...

13)  In the Security for MOM Service dialog lock down the access to the service however you like.  You can even remove the local admins group.  You can go so far as to not even allow them to see it!  Make sure you set it up so that you still have access to see and manage the service in case you need to.

14)  Click OK. Click OK.

15)  Wait for the next group policy update on the computers in the target scope that you created.  If you want to force it immediately on a computer to test it out you can run gpupdate /force at a command prompt.

16)  Repeat if necessary for other sites, domains, OUs.

17)  Stand up, flex your muscles, and say 'How do you like me now?!'

MOM is a movie star!

MOM 2005 is featured in a new Harrison Ford movie that recently came out called Firewall.  While I can't say much for the movie itself, it was cool to see MOM in action on the big screen.

You can clearly see MOM running on a second monitor in Harrison Ford's office about a third of the way through the movie.  About two thirds of the way through the movie, Harrison Ford uploads a virus into the system and MOM goes into action!  The state view goes from green --> red in a sweeping cascade of failures and then Harrison Ford pivots to a topology view where the servers are blinking red.  Error messages start opening in new windows and cascading across the desktop.

It was all pretty dramatic, but a lot of it was Hollywood.  For one, the State view refreshes all at once not in a cascading update.  The topology control cannot have blinking red servers on it.  And MOM doesnt generate error message windows that cascade across your desktop.

Maybe MOM will win Best Supporting Actress at the Oscars?

Here is a link to the movie site:

http://firewallmovie.warnerbros.com/

Also - don't be fooled.  There are lots of shots of other Microsoft products including Windows, Outlook, and Visio.  We all got fooled more than once by fleeting glimpses of Outlook and Visio.  But when MOM shows up on the scene there is no mistaking it!

Have you installed MOM 2005 Summary Reporting Pack?

The MOM 2005 Summary Reporting Pack (SRP) extends the MOM data warehouse to provide long term reports on performance metrics and alerts based on weekly and daily summarization of data. Key reports include Exchange resource and protocol utilization, AD disk utilization and replication latency, OS performance, and generic summary reports for performance counter analysis, alert counts, and alert resolution times. The Summary Reporting Pack increases the performance and reduces the storage resources required for long term reporting with the MOM data warehouse.

Download SRP from this link: http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyID=65651A27-4A20-4BF4-AF11-1691EF184BF6&displaylang=en

SRP performs aggregation, or summarization, of the performance counter and alert data in your organization's MOM 2005 Reporting database. The SRP then performs analysis of this summarized data and provides reports that aid in evaluating operational trends in your organization's IT infrastructure.

The SRP provides generic performance counter and alert data reports and the following management pack specific reports:

·         Active Directory

·         Exchange

·         MOM

·         Windows Base OS

The time needed to run these reports increases minimally even as the MOM Reporting database increases significantly in size. The installation of the MOM 2005 SRP creates new tables in the SystemCenterReporting database, the same database used by MOM 2005 Reporting. More information on SRP and tables created are documented in the SRP Users Guide which you can access when you download SRP from the link above.
