  • FW: IT Work: Contract Sadness

This article hit WAY too close to home for me: Too many CIOs cut enterprise software deals that look fabulous to the CEO and CFO but commit the people who do the real work to a nightmare of unrealistic expectations.[http://www.cio.com/archive/091505/schrage.html] I have lived through several such projects in my career.  In most cases, if you ...

  • PLEASE NOTE: This blog has moved to Slashstar.com

Technically, I moved this blog to Slashstar almost a year ago (April 14, 2004), but I've been cross-posting all of my content to both locations. Well, last week I upgraded Slashstar to Community Server - which among other things means that, at least in the short term, new content will no longer be syndicated. (I may eventually upgrade that provider

  • Why not...

While we're at it, lets bring back Cobol and Pascal!  Why not!?! Continual movement is the way of the tech industry.  Out with the old, in with the new.  You must keep up, not begging for the old technologies to be around past their time. (Note: I know Cobol isn't dead, but the people who use it are getting older/fewer and the job ...

  • IIS Log Parsing Tool

mszCool posts about some great log parsing tools for IIS 6. That's exactly what I've been wanting for so long! I remember back in the day when I had Apache dumping my access log into mysql with a little log handler I hacked up. • Rant: Patents on Software

This SlashDot article ''Parens on Patents'' really struck a chord with me, and brought back alot of anger I have repressed for some time.  (yes, I am seeking professional help now  :p ) Basically, it discusses the fad of patenting software or its various features, and the subsequent stifling affect it has upon development. Many of ...
