Rocketboom MIA, DOA, or just LOL?

Not too shabbyQuick catchup here: last week Amanda from RocketBoom (yes, it is okay to be wondering ‘uh, who’s that’ right now, as the majority of people have no idea what I’m talking about already, but a few thousand folks are already waiting for me to skip to the chase) got fired (here’s her account of the story and here’s some of his). She was quickly replaced (very funny link), but then her replacement was sacked too. Apparently they were supposed to relaunch this week.  It’s been a big topic of discussion for a lot of people, but I don’t get it.  This guy watched daily, and I guess it was probably somewhat entertaining, but here’s the thing I don’t get:

How can one person being fired from a freaking vlog cause the entire Web 2.0 world to care this much???

I did a Google Blog search for “Amanda fired” and “Dan Rather retired“.  Amanda won about 2:1.  The same search in Google has Rather ahead 6:1.

Dan Rather had an impact on this country and the way we consume news.  We’ll see if Amanda’s impact will ever make it out of the long tail…

post Does any App need Kicking?

Heard about a company receiving some funding today, ended up doing a complete spit-take.  The KickApps Corporation was just given $6 million dollars by some really clever folks who are wise beyond their years venture capitalists who don’t really give a damn about where they put their money nor do they likely have any understanding of technology, but trends are trends, right?.  Ready for some fun quotes from their press release?  These are easily cut and pasted into your own Web 2.0 “business plan” so get the pencils out people…

The new venture promises a disruptive new approach to the current trends in user-generated video and social networking.

Ooh, so it’s a little bit of YouTube and Friendster, only it’s disruptive.  I’m sure it’s totally new and different…

The KickApps hosted application service is designed for content websites of any size in diverse verticals including entertainment, lifestyle, sports, community, health, and education.

Wait a sec, they are missing the key segments: illegal sharing of commercial video clips from Saturday Night Live, and, of course, porn.

Good luck, KickAppers.  If all goes well, YouTube get shut down (extremely likely), Google Video continues to suck bigtime (almost a guarantee), and nobody can remember names like Ababzabz or umundo (did I get either right?).  This positions you perfectly for the unbelievably big megatrend of crappy social video networking sites that are truly disruptive.  Yay!

Update: they launched.  Will review to determine if further posting is necessary.
