Transparancy - and a phone number

I was having a chat in the pub after the UC User group on Thursday night and the conversation got around to blogging and why so many Microsoftie's blogged.  Everyone I chatted to was really positive about the access to the "inside view" of Microsoft that bloggers gave them.  They were particularly complimentary about the fact that we presented the human face of Microsoft, were transparent, accessible, approachable, and always responded to the comments on our blogs.

In the UK we've had the team contact email addresses on the TechNet site for some time, it gives us the opportunity to be contactable at any time, so I've asked my team if they wanted to follow my lead and put their cell phone number on their blogs too (mine is on the left hand side of my blog home page).  The thing that I've been really impressed about is how having this number on my blog has changed the tone of conversations to me.  The calls I've received have been really positive about the fact that I'm available for anyone to call, and whilst I've not always been able to give an instant answer to the questions I've been asked, I'm a point of contact and escalation if needed.  Robert was always really proud of the fact that he could display his cellphone number on his blog in the knowledge that this wouldn't be abused, and he would accessible when needed.  Well I'm following his advice and so far - it feels rather good to be accessible......

I like that. Although I would think twice before calling, because I wouldn't like "misuse" such generous offer. But it's an option as the last resort. And hey, if it bothers you, you can/should still switch off the phone to get some privacy! ;-)
- On a more serious note: I have difficulties deciding how to address colleagues in IT: Some guys like to be emailed first, others have tons of unread emails in their inbox and they never get around. The latter only want to be phoned (hoping to address the problem right away). I try a mix to make it "right": Although this is stealing a bit of my time, they can either delete the email or the mailbox on the phone! (y)

Following Eileen's lead I've decided to post my mobile phone number on my blog. Bearing in mind that...

Jochen,
Thanks for not mis-using the fact I have my number here :-).  Most people don't misuse this sort of thing at all.  I'f I get inundated with calls, then I'll certainly blog about it!  Also, an interesting thought about how people would prefer to be contacted.  How about an extra field in AD with a "favourite way to contact", which could include your personal preferred way of communicating.  Simple to do, and effective for everyone :-)

Albert...
I'll let you know if I get a massive amount of calls... and what they're about... I think its just a comfort to know that there's someone there inside Microsoft to route and escalate stuff.
We'll see...

Recently, I chatted with someone whose businesss is networking, and who has one of the most widespread business networks anywhere. He's in high demand for speaking and consulting.  He also publishes his mobile number on his site. Many thousands have his business card with his mobile number. No one rings.  Everyone assumes he is too busy.

Jim,
I''m not anticipating to get many calls at all, busy or not.  I think that it's another way to make the whole team appear more approachable.  I receive so many mails that start "I'm mailing you as I've tried everywhere else with no success".  Well, if you could get hold of the correct person at Microsoft, straight away, then your problems would be sorted out with the miminum of frustration to you. And that's why I published my number.
...I'd like to be perceived as being busy all the time though, especially by the powers that be... :-)

What do you think?
