More Great Web 2.0 Software
Founding Web 2.0 Workgroup member Richard MacManus has recently become concerned about the cynicism of the Web 2.0 naysayers.  To the point he feels like abandoning the term altogether.  Though I understand where he's coming from, I believe he's somewhat over-concerned.  To Richard, I say there will always be naysayers, no matter what is happening.  And in this case, they generally aren't right.

Anyway, I find the arguments that most folks have against Web 2.0 to be very similar to the ones that people have made against a similar software concept, Service-Oriented Architecture.  As I pointed out recently, Gartner thinks SOA will underpin 80% of all software development by the year 2008.  Yet you can find otherwise completely responsible folks like Microsoft's Rich Turner claiming it doesn't exist at all.  Unfortunately this, like denying Web 2.0 exists and is important, just belies reality.  People are building and wiring together services into enterprise-wide and global service architectures, both SOA-style and Web 2.0-style.  And on a very large scale too. Some significant examples of SOA successes can be found on this list from IBM or in giant SOA projects like the DoD's Horizontal Fusion program or the nascent Global Information Grid.  Web 2.0 and SOA are both huge movements that are happening, like it or not.  (More importantly, see the massive list of Web 2.0 software below if you're not sure)

Unfortunately, folks like Russell Shaw (author of the ZDNet article mentioned above), seem to think that Web 2.0 is an attempt to describe something entirely new.  It doesn't.  As Tim O'Reilly made clear in his seminal description of Web 2.0 earlier this year, it represents the ideas that actually worked in the first generation of the Web.  The arguments that folks like Shaw use, like saying that Web 2.0 is too big an umbrella, and represents unrelated concepts, and is nothing new, shows how uninformed even the experts are.  And also represents a poor job by the folks that discuss it publicly (though the Web 2.0 Workgroup is certainly trying.)  Unfortunately, all of this creates a distorted and incomplete view that is then propogated by the mainstream press, making it worse.

So like any topic none of this will stop folks, who without facts and without bothering to actually study the ideas, from joining the naysayer bandwagon.  And in the end it's just like Shaw says, denying what's happening here is like saying the earth is flat.

As my post showed last week with all the incredible Web 2.0 software released in 2005 (which actively leverage various Web 2.0 best practices), not only is this stuff happening,  but lots of people actually care about it (125,000 readers in 7 days on an otherwise obscure technology blog.)

Anyway, thanks so much for the massive volume of comments and suggestions.  I've now had a little time to take a look at the vast collection of great new Web 2.0 software I wasn't necessarily aware of yet and I've assembled a new list below.

Without further ado, here's a summary of all the additional Web 2.0 software contributed by readers of this blog since last week:

Please Note: This list is in addition to last week's Best Web 2. 0 Software of 2005
Both lists must be consulted for a complete view!

Surfwax has powerful search features, something they call "targeted, multi-source (federated) searching", they somehow use XFN to relate focus groups through "site snaps". Very advanced stuff, I'm still discovering how to use it, but the effort is worth it. They also have a bookmarking service called Nextaris that handles links, clippings and images. You can combine all those, with user input, in blogs which are part of your directory structure. It really is awesome and I don't know why more people are aware of it, maybe it's too complex. Anyways, its worth a look-see. - rickdog

gOffice has, imho, better WP than Writely. I have problems with Writely editing, especially with complex webclips that are drag-dropped into it. gOffice has a presentation feature for spiffing up the doc before PDF output.

I love 24eyes, an "RSS Dashboard". You can create unlimited tabbed pages each with unlimited feed windows. You can import your feed OPML and make windows off of that. You can search for other peoples RSS pages and import them. Very web2.0'ish, the feed item fetching is lighting fast, this is my fave RSS reader.

TagTooga.com is a Wiki web directory (sort of like DMOZ meets Wikipedia) except anybody can create category/tags and edit entries. An interesting feature is that you can create your own page in TagTooga to hold links, and then use the HTML Feed feature to display those links live on your blog or site. So... the updating and maintenance of the links on THIS page could be automated by using TagTooga HTML feeds. See http://www.tagtooga.com/tapp/db.exe?c=htmlfeeds

Also, HTML snapshot feeds can be created. Check out this test blog: http://tagtooga.blogspot.com/ The thumbnails come from a simple piece of Javascript you put on your page.

The performanc ing.com team has just released a week ago the public beta of PMetrics. PMetrics is a server based multi-site statistic package powered by performancing.com and aimed at blogs but also usable for standard websites. Regarding the multi-site feature they have already announced the multi-site-stat aggregation for the future. An API will also be available soon.
